If I am reading what you said correctly, if you load a flat-nose to the same length as a fmj, the flat nose will protrude less into the case, thus less pressure for a given powder charge. So nothing to worry about from that standpoint, if thats what was bothering you.

With pistol ammo, some times with flat-nose or HP's, you have to play with the seating depth to feed reliably.

If it still worries you, do some math. Measure a cartridge loaded to the min OAL. Measure the FMJ. Easy to figure out how much bullet is in the case.

Measure the flatnose or HP. When you load these, don't seat them any deeper into the case than the FMJ.

In my experience with your application,if it clips, and feeds, its good to go. The design of your clip and feed will make it mandatory to have the bullet ogive a max height,so start with an empty(no powder) leave it long try it all the way through the gun. keep seating it down till it goes and I would say your a go

I'm sure my Beretta can take any load with reasonable' OAL length, I'm more worried about the pressure. If I'm going to load max loads I don't want the bullet to sit too deep...

if its a semi, i found pretty much any oal that fits in the mag will fit in the camber!
if you have the means to measure the ogive (ie a comparator) you could make sure that the flatnose bullets are not seated closer to the lands than your round nose bullets are.

Keep in mind, those are the OAL lengths for their profile bullets as tested for producing the data. There is absolutely no reason you can't adjust the OAL with your profile of bullet to suit your gun if you choose.

What edition Hornady manual are you useing? My 4th edition says:

90gr xtp COL 1.080
100gr fmj COL 1.105
115gr xtp COL 1.050
115gr fmj COL 1.105
124gr fmj-fp COL 1.050
124gr fmj COL1.150

I always took those # to mean "as tested" for the data. In all likelyhood, they would be at an optimum length as far as enough bullet in the case to be held properly without being too deep, as determined by HORNADY.

There is still no reason you can't adjust the COL all you want. Just make sure you are not shortening a MAX LOAD. If you wantr to try shorter, reduce the powder charge and work up again.
