The U.S. government is opposing Korea’s bid to sell thousands of aging U.S. combat rifles to American gun collectors.

By Jung Sung-ki

The U.S. government opposed South Korea’s bid to sell hundreds of thousands of aging U.S. combat rifles to American gun collectors, a senior government official said Thursday.

The ministry announced the plan last September as part of efforts to boost its defense budget, saying the export of the M1 Garand and carbine rifles would start by the end of 2009.

The U.S. administration put the brakes on the plan, citing “problems” that could be caused by the importation of the rifles.

The problems the U.S. government cited were somewhat ambiguous, said an official at the Ministry of National Defense on condition of anonymity.

“The U.S. insisted that imports of the aging rifles could cause problems such as firearm accidents. It was also worried the weapons could be smuggled to terrorists, gangs or other people with bad intentions,” the official told The Korea Times.

“We’re still looking into the reason why the U.S. administration is objecting to the sale of the rifles and seeking ways to resolve the problems raised,” he said.

Critics say the ministry pushed to sell the firearms in a hasty manner without enough consultation with the U.S. beforehand, as calls were growing to increase defense expenditure.

The Seoul government sought to sell the outdated U.S guns back to the United States.

A total of 86,000 M1 rifles and another 22,000 carbines were to be sold, as the weapons have been mothballed for about five decades in military warehouses. The per-unit price of the M1 rifle is about $220 and the carbine is more than $140, according to the ministry.

M1s were made first in 1926 and used in World War II and the 1954-1975 Vietnam War. The carbines were first produced in 1941 and used during the 1950-1953 Korean War.

maybe we can get them at a lower price now that the USA does not want them

The U.S has a big problem with gangs using 80 year old rifles, do they?

Chances are these are are going to the smelter and we will see them imported into canada as washing machines and other Korean made products.

If there is some sort of magic act and these do get through to Canada, then I doubt we will see all of them. What I would guess will happen is an importer will go over to Korea, hand pick several thousand good ones (or have the Koreans do it) import the good ones and the rest will be scrapped.

As I understand it they shoot them one handed while holding them sideways (aka old school) and say things like "Sup G?" and " Pop a cap yo ass".

Yeah and it makes sense to state that they don't want the guns to go to terrorists. Ok sell the guns back to american collectors or let Korea ditch them to who ever will buy them. Those damn American gun collectors can't be trusted.

pffff, I carry my garand in my pants waistband all the time. then shoot it sideways when i gotta smoke some fool.

think of the children this will save

:D

Ol Obama might have done us Canadian shooters a favor. Korea still want more cash, and since the US is ruled out they are going to start looking elsewhere for the sale if they really do want to sell them. Also, since sale to the US is not applicable, the demand for the rifle just dropped significantly as the M1 Garands and M1A1 are really only desirable to collectors and sport shooters. This could mean that they might drop the prices quite a bit in order to sell, and some of the Canadian importers might take a second look.

If they sell 50,000 Garands to us for say $150 a rifle, thats still an extra 7.5 million. Which is a profit, a small one, but still a profit compared to the costs of scrapping them all, which is a loss.

At least this is how I see it, I did not even finish my one year business certificate (two class short) lol so its not an expert opinion. So if any actual business type folk want to correct my theory go ahead lol.

I bet there are interests opposed to the importation of 86000 cheap rifles who are worried the price of the Garands they're trying to sell will go through the floor... ;)
