odd bullet

I recived a lot of reloading odds and ends from a relative.
One odd bullet I found was a 45 cal cast bullet that is 1020 gr. in weight and 1.42 inches long
Was this bullet used in a cartridge or was somebody just being creative?

I'm pretty fuzzy on the specifics but back in the day, like pre WWI, there was a long range benchrest game that was played with huge big bore bench rifles weighing 30lb or more. I think it was mostly muzzle loaders but seems to me there were some cartridge guns too.

They used big charges and big bullets something like what you describe, loaded through false muzzles . Some of their 1000 yard records stood for many decades.

What's it made of? Any pictures? My .45 cal cast bullets run from 1.4" to just over 1.5" and they are typcally weigh from 520gr to 550gr. Is the thing nearly cylindrical or something?

A pic would be helpful, but if you go to The Bullet Barn's website (thebulletbarn.com) and look at the last bullet in the Rifle Bullets section, there is a .45 cal. "Postell" style bullet- 525 gr. and over an inch long. Just the ticket for long-range black powder target shooting. Our own Ben Hunchak (aka MT Chambers) probably does a similar style.

For the .45/70 and other .45 Sharps cals. the bullet must be 520 or more grains to have the necessary trajectory and retain enough energy to knock the steel rams down at 550 yds....With muzzle vel. of from 1100 to 1300fps, that is what it takes. For ranges to 1100 yds and longer, folks use 555gr. or heavier......Smaller cals. can be used on rams at 550 yds. but the .38s need 335gr. or heavier, and .40s need 400 gr. or heavier spitzers.
