I was shooting at my local range this evening and i spotted 3 fawns, two were playing off to my left, and one grazing to my right. I put my scope on the fawn to the right and noticed that there was a large bald spot from behind its front shoulder spanning to its butt (whole side). I know deer loose some hair this time of year, but this one was totally bald, What causes this? Rubbing?

Rubbing can be a cause.

And I edited your post a bit:)

d-mcg welcome to the site. Just to let you know, you're not going to make many friends here when you talk of improper firearms handling. We tend to be sticklers for safety and proper handling around here.

As for the deer, I've seen moose with lots of hair missing from ticks, but I think It might be a little early for them to be that bad. A couple years ago a buddy also shot a whitetail in saskatchewan, and it had a weird bald spot on it's side where the hair just fell out.

There fixed it for you.
There are no rules about looking at animals through your scope. He never said he used a loaded rifle nor he was thinking about shooting the fawn. Some of you guys need to get out in the real world a bit more and lighten up on the safety nazi bit.

Dunno about you, but if i'm at the range and some guy starts pointing his gun down the firing line at me, cause he's trying to look at some animals through his scope, I'd be mighty pissed. Even if he never said the rifle was loaded.;)

Well why the fu** would I point a rifle at a person. I was at the range, no one else was there and yes i did use my RIFLE scope to to get a closer look at the fawn. Unloaded, action open, finger off the trigger. Maybe you should stick to nerf guns if your such a wimp. Like I said I know how to handle a firearm.

Jesus guys, there was nobody else downrange, and he used his glass to check out animals that had wandered down range. It's not like he loaded up with ultra-babykilling-heatseeking-radar guided bullets with tactical nuclear tips, and balanced the rifle on his trigger finger while faking a seizure.

Pointing a rifle at a PERSON downrange? Oh yeah, BIG TIME bad move.

Glassing some animals that wandered on to your range, with an open action? No worries! It becomes an ergonomic spotting scope.

Some of you guys scare me... how do you shave? With a My Little Pony plastic razor set? :jerkit:

I've seen a few fawns and deer with patches missing from what I assume was rubbing. One had a half face. One side of the face was bald. Didn't get a close look, but it seemed, weird. As though something was gnawing at its face.

jesus... how did this thread go bad. I never once for a moment thought anything odd about the op's comment. I would have done the same.
Had it been downtown Edmonton out of his apartment balcony....I would be a little concerned.... ah, heck.... no I wouldnt LOL

Some people need to get out more sheesh. When I am hunting all I ever use is my scope. It's 9x better than my cheap binos. Anyways I would say its probably ringworm.
