Odd fawn at the range today?

What he said.

Jesus guys, there was nobody else downrange, and he used his glass to check out animals that had wandered down range. It's not like he loaded up with ultra-babykilling-heatseeking-radar guided bullets with tactical nuclear tips, and balanced the rifle on his trigger finger while faking a seizure.

Pointing a rifle at a PERSON downrange? Oh yeah, BIG TIME bad move.

Glassing some animals that wandered on to your range, with an open action? No worries! It becomes an ergonomic spotting scope.

Some of you guys scare me... how do you shave? With a My Little Pony plastic razor set? :jerkit:

I don't say to much on here but i will say some people should read more and type less. There is alot of assuming on this site.

Well why the fu** would I point a rifle at a person. I was at the range, no one else was there and yes i did use my RIFLE scope to to get a closer look at the fawn. Unloaded, action open, finger off the trigger. Maybe you should stick to nerf guns if your such a wimp. Like I said I know how to handle a firearm.

Yes I do take range safety seriously. Why? Because I shoot at homestead range where idiocy abounds. I have seen people do all kinds of stupid things, including when they *think* they are alone. As a result I believe (as do many others I have met over the years) in following proper range protocol even when I may be the only one there.

In the field it is a different matter (although I have been scoped by some wonderful people before, makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside), strictness is not always necessarily called for. Which is one of the reasons I generally prefer to do as much shooting away from the range (ie away from the people at the range) as possible.

Here's a good parallel: Talking on the phone while driving. They are both legal. They are both potentially dangerous to others, even when you think you're the only one around (or if you've done it a thousand times with no problems). I'm not going to condone either one in any place where there could be others around (shooting range/public road) even if you don't see someone, they could be just around the corner. But I'm not going to get upset if you're doing it somewhere less accessible. (Hunting in the woods/Driving through farmer Joe's field.)

Never glass another person period, that could get you shot.

Sorry, but I just gotta throw this in.

My exwife's cousin shot their second cousin through the guts, you guessed it, watching him through his rifle scope. They mostly play violins too.

Well there's no fixin' stupid now is there?Looking at a deer down range when no one else is around and lookin' at your uncle's, ex wife's, grandpa's, dog's, owner are not the same thing now are they.

I will state last year I came out of the bush with a guy pointing a rifle at me because he through I might be a bear coming out of the brush and was using his scope to "see". Except his rifle was loaded. It's very unnerving to say the least.

WTF does that have to do with a guy scoping a deer down range?
For Christ sake you guys get sooooo far off topic it is unbelievable.
Hey I remember this one time at band camp...................

A guy was SCOPING what he thought was a bear and instead it was ME!

Yes the OP knew what he was looking at and it was at a range so I have no problems with that. But it forms a HABIT. So the OP is out hunting and sees movement so he decides to scope it to see what it is and instead a Conservation Officer walks out of the bush and notices someone pointing a rifle at him, think that CO is going to be in a good mood with that?

Basically what you and all the other people making bullish comments towards the OPs actions are saying is "you better not look down range through your scope no matter what lest you pull a #### cheney and shoot someone by accident"

How on earth is anything he did wrong? He said he was at the range shooting -all is ok. Then he said a deer wandered on to the range downrange near the targets -still no baby killing going on. Finally he said he took a look at it through his rifle scope -what do we do when hunting? still no issues here. He even said he went so far as to unload and go action open. I wouldn't have even done that, just take a peek then go back to what your doing.

I'm not at all condoning randomly glassing the bush because you think you heard what may have been an animal nor would I be pleased to walk out of the bush and find someone scoping me with their loaded rifle but cmon guys, hes at the range already looking through his scope at the paper target he was putting holes into, all he did was look at the animal downrange. What is wrong with you people? Absolutely nothing unsafe was done here whatsoever, you all need to get serious.

Wow...massive derail.

I have not seen a deer that has that condition around here.

I have seen a few bears with that kinda thing mind you.

CGN'ers:
Looking at a deer through scope at range= one step away from murder, manslaughter etc.

Anti gun lobby:
Gun owner= one step away from murder, manslaughter etc.

Hmmm. The disease is everywhere. :runaway:

I can't believe this thread turned into this nonsense.

Read my post a little closer, I stated I never had a real problem with it because it was at the range. What I stated was that it can form a habit which MIGHT someday cause a problem or an accident.

I carry a small but powerful set of binoculars with me to look through. The only time I look through the scope is when Im shooting the firearm.

Yeah a habit of looking at animals through your scope, thats big issue right?
How is this going to form a bad habit any worse that looking through you scope at a piece of paper? He identified his target then looked at it through his scope. If it had been a person then he would not have looked through the scope, he probably would've backed off from the firing line and given the person a good tongue lashing for wandering out onto a live range. People need to stop making issues where there are none.

Heyy, realistic people. Thanks guy's:)

d-mcg: Glad to see you are still in one piece! You must feel like one of those big WWII bombers flying through enemy flak.

It's a wonder any newcomer ever posts on here.:(

Notice to all new people: All posts must now be put before the WWW CGN Safety Committee, who also advise on how to become perfect in every way. Also, you must REMOVE your scope to look at an animal that wanders on to a gun range................jeez.

Thanks, I don't let some peoples ignorance bother me, if some duchebag tried preaching this at the range he would get a severe :kickInTheNuts:. People just make assumptions so they have something to wine about.
