Maybe a loyal comrade pistol whipped the German POW on the assembly line while he was working?

all these old guns always have me questioning when i see things like that! id love to see what someone who knows something about this error would have to say, im so curious!

I am guessing the cover or the die was not properly aligned when the stamp was applied. You can see the bottom right of the Tula star fades off. If the date and star are on the same die then my theory would make sense, however if they're on different dies who knows? The only people who will really know I imagine are dead now.

Just a mistaken incomplete stamping. I have a 49 SKS with half the fletching missing on the Tula star... Just an Ivan screw up... maybe too much vodka the night before...

Very interesting! Yours looks like every part of those old Tula stamps, from the individual lines of the star to the fletching on the arrow, were individual dies.

out of 3 SKS which I own one has no marking on cover

I think those ones were late production, should have a serial with letters in it stamped on the receiver somewhere instead? Sounds like there's a little debate on determining what dates the letters signify.

Things happen in production. I know for a fact that at least one 2.75" folding fin rocket warhead went to Vietnam with its roll stamped nomenclature double stamped. I slipped on the controls and the warhead went around twice.
