Odd trend in Sporter inflation...?

I'm sure others have noticed this as well...

I have seen Sporter Lee Enfields on the EE lately for $250-$300 PLUS shipping!?

Sporter P14's for the same amount as well!?

When did this start? not even six months ago they were still the regular $100-$150 ...

There isn't really a point to this thread... just felt like putting it out there.

... Maybe it is because no one wants them? :stirthepot2: and people are trying to catch the unaware by instilling a false sense of value through inflated cost? :)

I want them, but at a fair price. One of my best shooting .303's in my collection is an old Sporter. People can ask whatever they want, wether they get it is another story. I just had a guy offer me a P14 Sporter which I was really interested in, he wanted $250 which seems to be the going rate. After he sent me photos I was shocked by what I saw. The gun's wood was composed of 2-3 different stocks and very sporterized. The reciever had had a grinder treatment by bubba also. I valued the guns at $50 maybe on a good day. It seems that's the way it goes now a days, buyer be ware for sure.

I wouldn't part with my 1916 Sporter LE for $300, it's matching, in beautiful shape and was my first big rifle. I got it for $100 buck which to me was a steal.

Yea, I've noticed the same at the last auction, previously prices were reasonable. But last round chopped sporters were selling for 250+ auction fees. Some of them had cut barrels, mismatch, drilled and heavily pitted. I couldn't believe it.

The last sporter that I bought cost me $125, I restored it to full military (#1 Mk3* SMLE) condition and sold it for $300. No way in hell I'd pay more than $125 for a Bubba!

Those are the ones that give people crazy ideas. Parker hale sporters are valued @ $300 and up and I think thats why people try to get big cash for a regular bubba job, cause "it looks like the fancy one for $400".

I'd say it's gotta be worth double now, but it could even be worth more. Who knows? I think it's crazy what sporters are going for but what do I know, I payed like $50 more for my longbranch then most people ask for sporters.

The thing is, if you through a parker hale stock set on a no4, it doesnt make it a parkerhale no4. It makes it a low end sporter conversion with a set of parkerhale stocks. It would be worth more with the parkerhale stock set back on the one it originally came off of. Most higher end conversions wernt just take wood off and put there own on. It was also cut and recrown the barrel as well as add there own sight. For the higher end they also did a high gloss bluing.

If it was original parker hale conversion and with all the right parts a good value would be between 200-250. Although the last parker hale I picked up was missing a mag for $125. Depends on condition. Just like everything. The mk2 sporter you reblued, it does look cosmetically better now but doesnt really increase value, it stays about the same. Still a old sporter. Great hunting rifle though.

so what about the parker hale sporters with the monte carlo stock? those gotta be worth something!

Yes to the right collector they are. I'd go as high as $400 for a perfect high end commercial sporter like a Parker-Hale No4 Supreme or an EAL.

I have paid a premium for a fully restorable minty sporter from a rare manufacturer as well. I paid $250 for my NRF with a near perfect barrel for example.

Curious, whats it worth as a non PH sporter, i know im not going to get back what ive into the gun,
Problem is you get a newbie with cash burning a hole in his pocket and itching to buy a gun and he'll spend anything

The top rifle is the PH sporter with that i robbed the wood off of just for looking at it

At the end of the day, perceived value is a personal thing. I got my Sporter for $100 from a buddy at work that couldn't wait to unload it on me. My 1910 Ross was $150 and old guys were laughing at that show where i bought it whispering " look what that youngster bought!". My my Turk Mauser was refered to as "junk" in the thread where I first shaw it. Not to mention my no4 Mk1* longbranch with a full A.G. Parker accurising treatment that the seller was going to turn in to the cops for a free camera, cause " it's just an old crappy rifle".

See what I mean?
