I would like to know how one develops a load of a cartridge (wildcat) that not much information is out.

For example i have been thinking of having a 7x68s built with an 8x68s parent case. how would i know where to start and with which powder to go with?
Having tried the 8x68s this summer in a blaser, seeing the case size and thinking which caliber would have a good potential in this case, this is how it all started. now with a 180gr .284 out of that case i am guessing that the speed would be pretty impressive.

Would it be worth all the trouble or it would be similar to the 7rm

Let me know how you would go with this or you wouldn't go and why.

Thanks!

8x68 brass is available from European suppliers. It isn't cheap by any means. If frugality is a concern, you may want to stop before you start. Then of course there will be the cost of a barrel and custom reamer/dies as well. It sounds like a fun project though.

The first thing you will need to do is weigh an 8x68 case then fill it with water and weigh it again. The difference will tell you the volume of the case. Once you have this figure you can compare it to cases of similar volume such as the 7mmRemMag for example. When you find something close, then use the suggested starting load for that cartridge and work up from there.

I think if you look online you will find your dream cartridge is already in existence or duplicated in some other manner. Nothing much is new these days.

I built one years ago and have the reamer, if you want to go 30 degree shoulder and an improved case. I equals the 7mm-300 Win Mag, as case capacity is identical to a W-W 300 Win Mag case. It does in fact equal the 7 STW and is a very nice looking and well balanced cartridge, more so than the STW and runs through a 300 WM length action.
I used RWS cases and a couple years ago I had a German friend buy me 200 cases and ship them over to me........cost was a little over $2.00 a case. I do believe Huntingtons has them in stock again, but will not ship across the border, but if you live close to a border it's easily do able and is not an illegal act to bring them into Canada.

For data I started with top 7 RM data and worked up from there, using IMR 7828, today RL 22 and possibly 25 and H1000 would also be good candidates. I got 3400 fps with 160 gn bullets and hunted in Texas with it a bit, no wait that was a 7mm-300 WM, but identical ballistics.

Here's a photo...........Sorry, not a very clear phot but from left to right is 7mm Rem Mag, 7X68 imp, 8X68 factory and 300 Win Mag
