Hey everyone, Id like to thank everyone for their replies in advance.

This will be my first year hunting, and have 0 background in hunting. Im new to the area, with no ties to anyone that hunts either. Im grateful this online community exists - fills that void to answer some of my stupid questions.

Im trying to do my best to get into the sport with the best knowledge possible. Tons of great info here, and other places... so much that my brain is starting to hurt from trying to comprehend and memorize it!

Across my research, Ive come across the OFAH and wondering more about it. Is it a worthwhile membership? Id like to hear everyones opinions on it.

Cheers,
Cody

Many members here feel that the OFAH is a "FUDD" organisation that turned it's back on pistol shooters and the black rifle crowd.

That being said, they are a MASSIVE group with effective fundraising and fairly strong political clout that fights for hunting and fishing rights in Ontario and is active in conservation efforts. They were active in the fight to destroy the LGR, and I feel that they are worth joining but I make it known I want restricted firearm hunting, and that I am a shooter, not just a hunter.

Some of the property I hunt on requires that I have insurance to hunt there, the OFAH provides that for their members.

basically what he said. Getting their membership through the kits they sell if a great deal, and asking to hunt on peoples land and showing you have insurance is a huge plus. People I have met have gotten nervous due to liability reasons.

Well it appears its a worthwhile investment, the discounts saved since I need to pick up a good portion of hunting equipment will probably cover the costs of the membership itself!

I joined after taking the Turkey course. Also in my neck of the woods, Simcoe County Forest lands requires you be an OFAH member in order to hunt on it. I also like renewing and getting a bunch of free stuff and enjoy the magazine. I figure the mag and stuff more than pays for the membership and liability and other stuff.

It's worth it. Although they haven't been the greatest at defending the restricted stuff that seems to be slowly changing. They have made some great progress in Ontario with things like the fall turkey hunt, elk hunt, Sunday gun hunting and so on.

In my opinion, everyone who hunts should be a member. They might not be perfect, but on the whole are pretty good and speak for hunters in a professional manner with the media and so on.

I agree with sbound ... if you live and hunt in ontario you should join the ofah. The magazine is great as well - that will provide you with some good info if you're just getting into things. join and enjoy!

I enjoy being a member with the OFAH. I usually re-up my membership with one of the package deals. You end up with more merchandise and magazines than you pay for, plus you get the membership included. Well worth it!

Is there any cool stuff in the actual main office/building off the highway? I always pass by it on the way to my cottage in Havelock but have never popped in, hey I am paying for a membership, the least they could do is let me use the toilet lol

They did turn their backs on us. I tried to contact them, both via email and phone and even explained when they called asking for the renewal. No emails or calls have ever been returned.

As far as insurance, my CFI insurance through the gun club covers me whenever I'm involved in shooting activities so no need for OFAH....

I would need to hear more about what they are doing to try and get hunting with the AR platform reinstated or handgun hunting reinstated before I would consider supporting them again. The treachery from Bill C-68 still rings in my head. Truly, I am open to supporting them again, but I would need to see what they are doing in terms of those two things specifically.

I am a member and will always be a member. It's one of the biggest political means of getting across to both the MNR and the provincial/ federal governments. With out the OFAH and the CSSA I don't think we would be rid of the long gun registry.

I say put your money where your mouth is and put it to some good use through one of the biggest conservation groups in Canada. If you want to hunt Turkey's and Elk you have the OFAH to thank for that.

I agree 100%, They actively campaigned against Handgun hunting and that is almost unforgiveable. However the tide is turning I hope and The more members who push for Handgun hunting and legalising Ar's etc for hunting the better.

I joined as I don't want any trouble hunting in the Simcoe forest, and like others have said all the merchandise you get when you join is well worth it.

Insurance is a major + for them. Magazine is decent too. Although you dont have to be a member to use their forums, i'd recommend checking it out. A little more in depth on hunting then these boards, about ON in particular.
