I was out at the range last night, walking the trails the archery and blackpowder guys use. I brought along the Mosin because I figured I should take something. When I was done the areas on the rifle I was holding onto were sticky and had lost the smooth feeling of the rest of the stock. Anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions to remedy it?

Yup, DEET will do that. A friend found out with his Browning Superposed. Fortunately he noticed before permanent harm resulted.

you should see the car hood of a guy I knew that sprayed deet all over his gear right then and there  The next morning boy was he in for a surprise!

We used to use it in the CF to remove camo from our faces :) Cleans the grit out of the C-7 handguards too ;)

It will also destroy fishing line.

I always try to keep it off of my palms, I used my Browning for sporting clays all last summer and no problems. It might also be related to prolonged contact because even the deet on my cheek didn't affect it.

Not to mention shorten your life.

That's a very persistent myth. It was determined ages ago that DEET poses no health risk to humans (when used as directed)

Try retouching the damaged areas with amber colored shellac available at the specialised paint stores. It is does not work, strip the stock and redo it over with the same shellac. Stay away from True Oil or varnish!

It depends upon if the rifle is shellac'd or if it's oiled. If it's an oiled finn stock, they used a raindeer tallow oil which is tough to replicate, but you can melt 1/3 crisco or beef tallow to 2/3 BLO and it's a close match.

If it's a Russian shellac finish, the correct color isn;t available at local stores. As JP says, amber is sort of close, but the correct tint is Garnet. You can order the flakes online and mix it yourself with isopropyl alcohol to touch up the areas perfectly. Depends how determined you are.

DEET and anything plastic, or plastic like, this includes paint

I had a brand new Swiss Army watch my kiddo gave me. One spray later, the plastic watch back was toast and the watch was "frozen in time". :(
Damn! I really liked that watch too.

It ain't Finnish but I think that'll be how she's goin, she's missing a cleaning rod, no two parts have the same number and she's import marked to boot. If she was an imtact unit then I might be temped to find some shellac

Maybe just try the amber shellac mentioned earlier. It might be a little off colour, but it would "appear" more correct than BLO.
