This is prompted by another thread. Please post targets you've shot from the standing position only. Only your 2 feet touching the ground, loop slings are fine but no elaborate braces etc, please. My point is most shooters cannot out shoot a $500 factory rifle while standing. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slamming high end gear to meet the rules of specific competitions or just because you can, but a $5k rifle does not a sniper make. My military experience is long on basic skills and training, but filled with the memory of relatively common, simple tools that most serious "hobby" shooters would scoff at.
 
if you think outside the box a cheaper gun just might make you shoot better.......standing
 
I smacked a 10" gong 2 times out of 3 off hand at aprox 400yds with a SS Browning A-bolt in .300wm topped with a Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x40mm.

Two other CGN members were there to confirm if needed.
 
I am a public safety hazard trying to shoot off-hand. The only way I could hit the broad side of a barn is by shooting from inside the barn
 
Humble the BR shooter

Nothing will humble the benchrest shooter more than the first few times he tries off hand..... This is an art unto its self takes looooooots of practice, but if you are persistent it really helps the hunter with snap (quick) shooting in the bush.
 
Is this going to be a CGN challenge? Centerfire bolt action precision rigs at a 100 yards, freehand with only a sling allowed. I'm game:D Will try this next weekend.
 
haha this might be interesting. My 260 weighs almost 20lb with a 8-32 scope. It is a pain to carry let alone hold up in a shooting position. I'm no super tough guy either.

I'll be lucky if I hit paper. That and I'm not sure I want to go about using my carefully prepped and loaded rounds.

Correct me if I'm doing the math wrong, but thats about 2 1/2 MOA right? You sir, are a good shot. My M305 with Wally World 150s does about 2 1/2 MOA off my tail gate at 100m.

You could use a lighter hunting rifle, unless it would be the limiting factor in the results.
 
It is do-able but tough. I sight in on an 8" gong at 200yd offhand with a Bushnell Legend at full power on a 300WM. Hitting at 400, there would have to be not even a breeze.
 
I went shooting one afternoon at Whitehorse Rifle and Pistol Club. I was with a co-worker and his son. The son is an accomplished (in my opinion) silohoutte shooter. I was shooting at a steel gong that was beyond the 500 yard line up on the hill. I believe it was 560 or so. I dialed in my Coyote and rang it a couple of times. Sonny boy asks if he can have a shot, so I said sure. He picked up that rifle and with no sling or anything nails the gong first shot, never having fired the rifle before.

I have to say I was impressed and know that I could never have done that, never mind in one shot. The rifle weighs 16ish pounds or so. Blew me away, so now I know it is possible. Next time I go out I'll try some offhand just to see...

He posted in the precision section otherwise it doesn't belong here if we aren't talking precision rifles.

if we are talking shooting off hand with regular hunting rifles i'll have this thread moved
 
In 2004, friend of mine shooting my 6.5-284 (under 10.5lbs scoped) got into a shoot-out with another fellow at the Tweedsmuir (Burns Lake)1000 yd shoot. This was the freehand shoot out for a bottle of whiskey at the end of the day. I believe the target is a 4 moa steel gong. These two fellows went at it and hit the gong back and forth 7 out of 10 each until my buddy finally won(it was funny that when one guy missed so did the other, and when one guy hit so did the other, etc...). Very cool to witness. The amazing thing was my Jewel trigger was set at under 2 ounces, and I couldn't freehand shoot it for the life of me.

You don't think the "Silhouette" shooters don't carefully prep their loaded rounds?
