we'll lets see who got a bird opening day.

I just got home from a morning hunt, could of shot a small jake(2 inch beard) around 7am but i didn't, I'll wait for a bigger one. Heard tons of gobbling til about 8am, but it was a long ways away. Had a deer snorting at my decoys before the sun rose, looked like he was trying to scare my decoys outta his field lol. I was hearin lots of shots earily on too, i counted atleast 9 shots, most real far away(next concesion over).

only had one bird gobble after i called, I dont think the hens are off laying yet so the toms arent out looking for hens very much.

how did everyone else do so far?

Well I did all right, shot my biggest tom to date. The morning started off with me setting up my pretty boy and pretty girl decoys on a hill in a field that the turkeys like to strut on. It was pretty quit no gobbling, so I started to glass the field and saw two toms in the far corner starring at pretty boy. I tried a little calling and they would not come, one tom seemed to be the dominate bird of the two as he would just go into strut every time I started to call. Then two hens and a jake showed themselves. Well after about 45 min the two hens headed off into the forest on the other side of the field that I was sitting on, with the toms and jake following. Shortly after they went out of site a turkey gobbled, and I realized that another bird was behind me and on my side off the field out of my sight. I then started to cutt and yelp and this bird started to gobble like crazy, then he stopped and went quit. I knew the bird was comming so I was watching over my left shoulder and saw him running towards my decoys. He then stopped 15 yards beside me stuck his head out to sound off and you know what happened next BANG! He weighed 23.3 lbs had a 10.25 inch beard and spurs that where 1.25 inch long. He had quit a few wounds on him from fighting. I'm going to try with my bow next. Good Luck

HEY! Congrats to the both of you. Sounds like you have some great spots picked out.

This is my first year as a licensed Turkey hunter. So far, no luck even finding a location. I'll be out again this weekend knocking on farmers doors to beg for a spot. Seems that too many of my predecessors haven't been perfect guests and have left a bad taste with some local landowners.:bangHead:
So far no one has caved in to my begging.:)

Anyone know of any Crown land around the Toronto area??? It may be easier just to walk out and pick my own spot that way. I'm just itching to get me a huge Tom!!!

Thanks, and good luck to everyone.

Just got back from my hunt, and my season is over. I filled both my tags. I saw something I've never seen before though. There were 2 Toms, about 60 yards away from me, fighting like mad. I sat and watched this scrap for around 20 minutes until 1 of them finally gave up and moved on. Wished I had my video camera...that was some fight.

ok now that your hunt is over you gonna share where you got them :p

done work at 4 on wednesday, was notching my tag at 5:22!!!!!! Iwas on my way to a spot and stopped on a ridge to have a look. Saw a hen run off about 100 yards away so I sat down part way down the ridge and waited. Did a bunch of yelps then noticed some movement. 2 big jakes tip toeing along about 75 yards to my left. I let out another couple yelps and they both tried to gobble then headed up the ridge. I swithched to a long kee-kee with a different call and waited. About 5 minutes later I heard PUTT -PUTT -PUTT about 12 feet from right ear! I turned and he flew over my right shoulder then landed about 20 yards out directly in front of me. He put his head up to get his bearings and I sent a swarm of them directly for it. 16lb jake 4" beard and little 3/8" spurs(knobs). His brother even stuck around to look at me before he flew off. What a rush though!!!, LOVE IT!, Got er did, EH!

Congrats Marlin! I got a similar bird on Thursday. It was my first turkey, & I agree it was a RUSH!!! 10 times worst than buck fever IMHO. Had a bigger jake surprise me on Wed., but didn't have the gun on my lap so had to let him go. I have my second tag to fill, but will wait a few days before I go out again.
Being a newbie turkey hunter, I'm curious what type of call you were using? Since I don't have a steady turkey hunting partner, I tend to just use my boxcall for loud calling, & a mouth call for the close in work. I made an excellent sounding pot call, but you need 2 hands to run it & when the birds are in sight I like to have the gun up & ready.

i have had my best luck with wood box calls. Never had any success with diaphrams or slates. I have called in 3/4 with only a push button yelper. I think I will continue to use it as my main locater call and switch to other calls if and when I get an answer.

I have always liked the box calls or the slates to start with and then switch to a push button call when they get closer. I hate using those diaphram calls. I have never been able to make them sound as good as a slate call.:(
