"The officer was taking part in a firearms training course on Aug. 7 when he and his partner went to a store on Taylor Avenue to get some lunch about 1 p.m., Const. Jay Murray said.

The officer, who had his gun in his holster, opened the car door with one hand while holding his lunch with the other.

As the officer sat down, the gun went off, shooting him in the lower leg.

Winnipeg police officer injured after gun fires inside holster
"The bullet entered the right side of his leg and severed three arteries," Murray said. "He described it to me as the most amount of blood he's seen. This officer's been on for eight years and a number of years with the tactical support team, and he said it was like something out of a movie."

I wonder what holster was used. I can't conceive of a reasonable way to discharge a gun that's holstered in a Safariland 6004, which is pretty likely. Maybe he was using a Safariland ALS holser, and the gun wasn't fully seated, allowing something to get trapped between the holster body and trigger when he was sitting down (the toggle of a jacket's adjustable elastic waistband, for example, can get caught in the trigger).

Maybe it was a Blackhawk SERPA, and all bets are off, because those ####ing holster are dangerous.

Here's a video from Winnipeg CTV that also explains what happened.

Didn't know Winnipeg PD uses G35s. Unusual choice for a service pistol. Wonder if they have a NY trigger on them?
I can't see a Glock going off on it's own. Something must have hooked the Safe Action trigger when he was sitting down. A very unfortunate, bad luck chain of events. Hope the officer recovers completely.

Sorry Glock lovers....(me included, I have one and love it)...history repeats it's self.

This happened in Calgary. Yes when the frame rails / inserts break and separate from the frame and the slide lifts off slightly the gun can fire....with a worn firing pin safety.

The fact it happened when he was getting into a vehicle tells me the pistol was knocked about in some way and this caused the ND. Hard to say more without knowing if the gun was broken, the model of holster, or if the gun was fully seated in the holster at the time.

Only the Tactical Unit uses the Glock 35, the general patrol units have Glock 22's and the investigators have Glock 27's. Not sure on the trigger weight, I thought Glock would not sell the 35 with a minus connector to a police agency. The Glock 22's have the NY1 trigger spring in them.

It was a drop leg holster not sure of brand but likely Safariland.

Glad he didn't bleed out.

Do y'all think he might have gotten a strap or some piece of clothing jammed in with his pistol when it was holstered?

So it's apparently true after all Handguns are inherently evil and dangerous Has nothing to do with the individual in control of it Spontaneous Discharge ummm are the authorities aware of this ?

First time I've heard that one. Had a lot of experience with Glock. Have to look at that next time I into mine.

I looked up the last bid opportunity and Winnipeg Police Service Glock 35's have the NY 1 trigger as I expected.

With the NY1 trigger, I really cannot see a Glock firing on its own. At least, not one that is mechanically sound. I'm sure we'll find out one way or another soon enough.
I can see another " Condition 1 vs. Condition 3" carry thread starting soon!

Member applied tactical tourniquet to himself immediately after the gun went off, the round severed three arteries and he lost a considerable amount of blood. It will either be a mechanical failure as Rich has suggested or a problem with the holster or perhaps both.

I don't think this is the same situation as the SIG though. There are lots of these pistols in use by police and military agencies and this is the first one I am aware of, if it was a major problem, it would have shown by now and these guns have been around for over 30 years.
