Official 2019 Wild Turkey Thread

I’ve been practicing with the box and pot, but I just cannot get a diaphragm to work for me. It sounds ridiculous, but they just tickle the roof of my mouth too much. As soon as I start to get a little sound out of it, the vibration tickles the roof of my mouth and I literally need to rip it out and stick a for in there to scratch the itch like a lunatic. I keep trying every spring, but always the same result. Anyone else in this boat? Doubt it lol.

I tried a coyote howl call once and the vibrations numbed my lips for like a hour. I have way to sensative gag reflex for using in the mouth calls

Anybody tried this stuff yet?

I can’t afford the TSS stuff that all the cool kids are using these days lol.

It came doe to this or federal flight control. Apparently the shot is Han Soloed into a block of resin, which shatters and released the shot a it leaves the barrel. Like a really s***ty wax slug lol.

They only had 4 and 5 on the shelf, otherwise I would have gotten 6 or 7. I was going to pattern it yesterday but it was nasty out.

I have used that in 3.5" #6's and it patterned well in my Maxus with Carlson's extended .665" tube... killed a few Tom's with it. I went back to the Black box Supreme's in 3.5" #6 2 oz. @ 1300 fps... it has consistently patterned best in my last few turkey guns (or at least guns that I have used for turkeys).

P.S - some people have too high a gag reflex to use diaphragm calls, of which I am one, almost 100% clay pots for me... but my son can really make a diaphragm sing... it freaks me out how much he sounds like a live bird.

For longs as i started to hunt turkeys in NY state early 90, i have hunted with 2 collapsable hen decoys and called with a system called the Fighting Purrs system from Knight & Hale ( 2 little push box with different pitch, you just use your 2 hands and make some noise that ressemble a turkey fight) bird cant resist and run to the decoy.

Yeah, I watch the guys on YouTube and I swear they’re dubbing real birds over them lol.

What’s everyone’s go-to “shock” call?

A single cluck on the slate. As gun as it is to listen to them gobble all morning, I'm not sure I know why a shock call is all that important. Once you know they are there, and they know you are there, its time to shut up, put down the call, pick up the gun and wait.

Happens to me too, but for me it triggers my gag reflex. I keep at it as much as possible

I have never been able to use diaphragms. Roof of my mouth is to high and narrow and they make me drool like a rabid critter. That and I get a grade A headache in five minutes or less. Box and pot have worked fine the last 20 years.

I don't use a shock call, other than a raspy hen yelp when starting out calling in the mornings... contrary to popular practice, I don't put the birds to "bed"... I simply scout and make sure the birds are in the area and then set up for my morning hunt while it is full dark... once it is legal light, I start out with some fly down yelps, that generally will get all of the toms within earshot sounding off. After the initial set-up, I am running and gunning. Every set-up has the potential to produce a mouthy/hot tom or a silent runner... you have to stay on your toes... some of my biggest birds have come in sneaky and silent... so don't get so focused on vocal birds that you miss the smart, silent ones... Even when you are not hearing birds they can still be there.

The good people at Meateater just made a T-shirt discussing such a thing:

Sounds that make a turkey gobble...

Dry heaves, an anchor banging the side of a boat, train whistles, antlers rattling, artillery fire, hucking rocks at a stop sign, loons, the hourly bells of a monastery, whitetail deer blowing, Canada geese, ambulance siren, the call of a peacock, cars crossing rumble strips, ice cream truck, dog whistle, screech of breaking a lug nut loose when changing a tire, six a.m. shift whistle at a plastics factory, pileated woodpeckers hammering away at a tree, motorcycle, engine of a bass boat, sonic boom from military aircraft, screech of a hawk, passing helicopter, gun shot of a turkey hunter, coyote howls, bray of a jackass, squeaky screen door hinges, cattle guard, elk bugle, kicking a rusty hunk of metal...and the list goes on

I was reading an article in Field and Stream about a new TSS load from Federal.410 #9 shot, effective on turkeys out to 40 yards.

410 is very potent with small shot.

6 or 7 years ago we had this domestic turkey we had to kill for Thanksgiving, it was a very agressive bird, instead of getting spurred, i took my wife single shot 410 with a 3 inch 7.5 shot.

At 30 yards a head shot, the bird fell in is track

Unfortunately nothing smaller then 20ga is allowed in Ontario for turkey

I recall in an episode of the meat eater podcast one of the guys stated that (considering load development and modern loads) "our children will hunt turkey with .410"

I roll an 870 20ga 3" #7 nitro pheasant for everything upland

Im heading to spot around rock creek BC this weekend..... will update

I know but i meant to say this new load will be good, this year i did not prepared for turkey hunting in NH.

Next year i will prepare for the hunt, and i will try this new load in my 686 410 gauge .

Yup the 10 guage will do some barking very soon .....and it’s lethal out to 70 yards.....
Ask me how I know
Cause I killed them at that distance.....and buddy couldn’t believe I did it .....Jesus this and Jesus that he said ...
I looked at him and just smiled
Ah good times !

What was the spread like at 70 yards? Many pellets in the body?
