Took the T97 out shooting for the first time today. I used Barnual steel cased FMJ ammo and I didn't shoot for groups, was just getting a feel for the rifle.
Some observations
The good:
- the safety works well in that it blocks the sear from moving and not just the trigger
- it works with my RRA 10rd pistol mags and feeds the first round out of the mag when chambered on a closed and loaded bolt
- it handles and points well
- the sights were on and nice to look through, the front hood matches up nicely with the rear peep to frame the target with little effort
- recoil is very light and it has very little muzzle jump
- field stripping is easy
- complete take down is easy and the trigger unit comes out as a complete package
- the whole operating system is really neat with the short stroke gas piston hitting the AK like bolt carrier with the nice big lugged bolt and fired by a big striker assembly (sort of feels like firing an open bolt gun)
- there is a hole in the bottom of the locking lug ring to let debris fall out, good for primers that fall out and jam the works up (the AR doesn't have this and needs it)
- the trigger pull is a bit odd but light and much nicer than the Tavors I've tried
- positive extraction and ejection
The bad:
- my early (gen one I guess) pmags do not even try to fit into the mag well
- sometimes had trouble stripping the first round out of the tighter two of my 10rd mags when manually releasing the bolt (I think this is a mag issue)
- the safety would be awkward for shooting matches where speed was needed
- mag changes are clumsy so far but should get better
- the mag release button is too small, a much bigger one would be nice and should be easy enough to make
- optics mounting looks awkward, I think it needs the QD scope that was built for it and not a rail held on with screws
Not sure if this is a bad thing but there doesn't seem to be much material between my face and an out of battery firing if it ever happend, some sort of shielding in the receiver cover might be a good idea.
