It wasn't suposed to happen yet, at least until I began making more money...

I was at the local range with my Maverick 88 (security) to shoot some slugs and various boxes of shot I have aquired at some cardboard bears I had made up, and a fellow from the club came over to the rifle range and asked if I could wait while they shot some clays.

(Our Ranges overlap slightly so we have to take turns.)

Then seeing I had my shotgun in hand they invited me over and took the time to show me the ropes of the sport, offer some shooting tips, and even covered the cost of my clays as I had no money on me at the time.

So here I was with a 18.5" barrel (cylinder bore) shooting clays for the first time, and I even managed to hit some! And later I was given the chance to try a few other types of shottys. :)

I tell yah I didn't expect in a million years that the sight of a clay turning into dust in view of my shotguns HiViz sight was going to hook me like that, but it did BIG TIME!

And it gets even better, when I came home and told my wife about the fun match coming up at our local range on the 27th, and in a move that totaly suprised me she said she wanted to come along and shoot for the first time also! :)

Then after I told her about needing an extra barrel that was a little longer and had some sort of choke she said "well we had better get one then". :eek:

So it begins...just thought I'd share.

That's about how I started years ago. An 18.5" gun and a group of guys who invited me to shoot trap. Then the madness began. Bought a longer barrel for the pump gun, an unexpected tax return went on a Browning BT99 then someone suggested we try sporting clays so a semi came into the fold, then an over/under and then another.... :D

Your hooked. Don't worry about being broke. It comes with the territory. There's a reason I have the sig line that I have. ;)
 
Your sig line has always made me smile, I might have to make it into a bumper sticker...it will look great on our beater car. :D

Yes I'm ordering a new longer chokeable barrel today (blush). :)
 
Hmm . . . sounds kinda familiar.

Just about a year ago I went trap shooting for the first time with some guys from work. It was basically the same thing - busting some clays opened up my mind and I couldn't stop thinking about. Actually, it was my first real shooting ever!

Since then I've joined CGN, got my PAL, got a nice Browning BPS shottie, an SKS and a TOZ 78 .22. I also got my BC Resident Hunter Number and just got back from a very short first hunting trip.

I've shot only 8 rounds of trap so far with my BPS. The last time I went I had a very relaxed but confident attitude. I decided to try the first round from a low hold just to do something different and I scored a 21. Next round was normal postion and I scored a 23. Now I'm keen to keep the good scores and get my first 25. If I get there and stay there (somewhat often, anyway) I might have to get a real trap gun . . . ;-) Oh the desire, the desire!

Welcome to the insanity !

The longer barrel & changeable chokes will surely help with the clays, but no matter what, Shotgun ( NOT "Shotty", you've grown-up now ) fit is THE most important criteria. The shotgun has to shoot where you're looking.

Shoot lots and get some help with fit - it's only a matter of time till your first 25 straight.

Delighted the wife is in the mix ... you'll have a lot less trouble if she is similarly taken by the sport too ! Surely she is going to need a shotgun of her own, and seeing how you're both shooting now, a reloader, and .......

A year ago last October I went to our club to "just try it".....

Well after that I became a member of the trap club bought a $800 O/U and numerous other accessories.....

Then it got really bad .....:rolleyes: .I have since bought a $3000 O/U, been looking for a press, chokes and usually shoot about 200 rounds a week practicing. I am going to compete in PITA starting next spring.

It is the best sport around and I am so glad I started. It is a sport I can see myself doing for the rest of my life.

Soon I'll have to go live in the tree outside. :)

Today at the local gunshow Shotguns (not shotties) where jumping off the table at me. I managed to get a 28" vent rib barrel for my Mav 88 for $125.00.

Still not a Full choke just a Modified choke, but light years above what I was using, and will get me through the next few months of local clay busting. :)
 
I'm in the same boat. I just started shooting 5-stand last year. I was using my rifle sighted 11-87 just to try it out, but have since found a steal of a deal on a used 1100 skeet. I suck right now, but figure after around 60k rounds, I should be able to hit something! Our club has a very nice field set up with 6 auto trap throwers. Should be out again this Saturday if the weather holds.

Oh,Oh..more competition in the PITA Provincials this year! :D

Calum, Last year at the Langley gun club, while celebrating a shooters 100,000 PITA target, he said. " You can decide to shoot trap seriously, or, buy a nice house". You may be walking that thin line..:D
 
Twenty-two years ago, I was browbeat into bringing my Winchester Defender to the CFB Cornwallis Trap Club. My third night out, some of the older guys said "That's an awful noisy gun, young feller, you should buy a quieter one with longer barrelS ..."
 
Sounds like the same way I got hooked. I was sighting in my new 870 "deer gun" when I just had to go over to where the guys were shooting sporting clays... Well, as you will soon find out, I go and shoot clays now on a fairly regular basis. Still only with the 870 Express... for now.
