So I am loading some rounds for my 222 Remington. 50 V-Max and 19.8 grains of IMR 4198.

Got about 20 loaded with what was left in one tin....open new tin [older stock, and sealed]
Yikes!! Lots of red "dust" with the powder. Looks like rust, and the inside of the tin is rusty.

Definitely starting to deteriorate. First time I have seen this with 4198.

Oh well, I guess it will make a nice fire outdoors, lol. Good thing it was bought at a decent price.

Opened another tin... different lot # and appears OK.

Regards, Dave.

I've seen the rust before in a couple of older cans I bought. I pour it onto a paper towel and roll it back and forth to remove the rust dust. If i have a plastic can in the same powder that's empty I put it in that and transfer the lot # info. Sometimes it takes a couple of paper towels to get the majority of it out.
Scott...

I bought 20 1lb tins of it for a song in an auction and was worried this is what I would find. Each one was sealed so I didn't open them for the sake of opening them, but I have about 11 or 12 left and no duds yet.

That powder is decomposing and is not safe to use. I would spread it on the grass and water it down. Makes good fertilizer.
