Oil Or Grease?

On the advice of my gunsmith I switched from using grease on break actions to using a little petroleum jelly applied with a Q-tip. Doesn't migrate into the stocks like oil, and doesn't put pressure on the hook like grease.

Grease doesn't put pressure on the hinge point, it cushons it from impact. Far better than oil does. Grease on th ehinge point, cocking piece slider, locking lugs and firing pins and oil on the trigger assembly. It all collects dirt and grit but that's why we clean our guns.

Perazzi shotguns come with a tube of grease and the manual shows where it should be applied. The hinge surface is one of the areas the manual recommends.

Ive always used a drop or two of oil, but then I don't use my break actions a lot. I have a gun specific grease made by Fastex that I use when I feel a grease is required.

Have you found a source of it in North America? I can get it but It’s not very cost effective to buy a new Perazzi for the tooth paste tube of grease.

oil will also pick up dirt & grit. It's probably more important to remove the old stuff and replace with new lubricant in a timely fashion than what type of lubricant you use.

I personally use grease (Gun Glide or the stuff that came with a Blaser I have) along with anti-seize on the choke tubes.

I used white lithium grease for years and always liked it's lubricating qualities. I only switched to synthetic grease because the white lithium would tend to harden a bit if the gun sat unused for a few months.

I have seen no sign of hardening, but exactly how long the gun has sat unused I cannot say. Certainly longer than a few months with our winters and all.

I use Lucas Red and Tacky comes in the conventional tube. Appears and performs identical to Owens Hinge Pin Lube sold in high end gun shops.

Now you are into some serious stuff.
I use it on all my snowblower gear boxes with great luck but man it is heavy and sticky for gun is it not
Plus I find it breaks down in heat
Cheers

I dont use grease since I clean my firearms after every use and grease tends to be more of a pain to clean. On the hinge pin/trunnions I like to use a couple drops of thicker viscosity synthetic motor oil. Works like a charm at lubricating metal on metal and keeps internals super clean. Also if used sparingly, it doesnt run like other oils if the gun sits for a period of time

I used gear oil for a while, I liked how it worked but the smell.....

Lubriplate white grease is a very good grease to use, its not too heavy, doesn't get thick in the cold, has good shear strength, and doesn't wear or wash off easily.

Really IMO I think anything pretty much works if you clean your gun on a regular basis

I know guys that have just used vaseline for years and that works fine for them

Just remember less is better in this case regardless what you like
Cheers
