Oil or stain?

I'm taking a shotgun out next week for a walk in the mountains. But after that I decided I'm going to strip it down and refinish the wood. I've used Linseed oil in the past and my results were 50/50. I liked it for some of the stocks I did, not so much for others. So what is a good brand/formula for an oil finish that goes on nice and even, and I could get a nice semi luster finish with? I know I could use a stain and polyurethane to get those results, but I would prefer a nice oil. Any suggestions?

TRu Oil...lay down how ever many coats it takes to fill the grain the on your last coat sand it down to to least a 1000 grit. Then after u have sanded it down to take away any nibs....take a small cotton swab and ..dab it in tru oil and use this as a rubbing patch....you will end up with a no shine stock but it will have lots of sheen to it..
