Circa 1850 tung oil has worked well for me for the past dozen or so years. If I buy a rifle with a shiny 'hard' finish stripping and oiling is the first thing I do to it. I find the tung oil to be excellent weather protection and durable. I'll usually re-coat once a year or so.
