Oiling mags? (how/whether to bother)

Just soaked a bunch of SVT mags in varsol/methyl hydrate and rinsed them in same, to get cosmoline off... works a hot damn.
Took off some cheaper refurb paint too, exposing the original battle roughened russian original paint/finish underneath which looks cooler anyhow.

Now, how do i oil the spring and internals? or do i just wipe the surface down with hoppes #9 and forget about inside?

Theres a hole on the back, a spritz from the spray can of hoppes?

Was concerned it'd just attract gunk.

The methly hydrate is a bad idea, anoter member just stripped all the bluing off his sks mag. What ever happened to good old mineral spirits?

I think they determined that it was likely the same refurb paint that this guy stripped off, not the bluing.

I gave my SVT mags an inside and out treatment of G96 after degreasing. Wipe on, let sit for a few minutes then wipe off. It doesn't leave too much crud attractant on them and helps to keep rust away.

Hoppes #9 is not much of a lubricant. I use a lot of Canadian Tire spray silicon lube when i want lube and rust reduction without too much gooey crap build up.

Unless you are using mags that get dropped in competition onto sandy ground, then they are best left bone dry.

yeah that is my thread about the sks mag.
I tested on these mags with a q-tip first.

it did take off a little refurb paint but it looks like they just overcoated the old cool looking russian finish and now it shows nicely. No damage here.

That SKS must have been refurbed somewhere bad.

how do you get the G96 or whatever INSIDE under the plate that holds the rounds? the mags dont come apart.. just spray and leave it to dry?

The "plate" is called the follower and the mags do come apart.

I have a feeling this is a wind up and I have just taken the bait.

The SKS thing was a wind up too right ?

There's a little hole on the bottom of the mag. Press inside it with a punch or some other hard object and the floor plate will slide off causing the long spring to whack you in the eye and wonder where you left your safety glasses. Unless you had some sort of terrible pin job done to yours, in which case it will no longer come apart. In that case, use the Ganderite spray.

If you oil your mags and drop them on the ground sand and dirt will make them jam easier. I've used dry silicone lubricant and find it helps them drop free easier.

Light, very light coat of oil helps prevent corrosion. Mag springs & follower are not high speed parts and wear is typically nil. The important thing is not to excess oil it to the point where it contaminates the rounds. Depositing a little oil each time in the chamber will build carbon. Chamber, bolt face, and ammo should always be clean and dry.
