Ok gents, here is the deal.im looking for a scope for a high grade gopher gun. i dont shoot off a bench. i dont target shoot with it. i shoot gophers almost as a job for a couple months a year. this is mostly my bench i shoot off.

almost 40,000 acre farm in southern Alberta. Last year i put almost 7000 rounds through 3 guns. For my main gun I have a TUFF 22 receiver, with a volquartson bolt, BX trigger group , magpull stock and a custom made 20" IBI barrel. now currently i have a cabellas covanant scope on it with for me, an almost perfect christmas tree retical. the glass however could be a whole lot better. here is what it looks like:

now there are lotsa scopes out there with a similar xmass tree, but most are FFP, which i can not use. on a calm day if im doing my part we make hits out to the 200 yard mark. not normally shooting that far but we do sometimes. not much splat at that range, sometimes the bullet doesnt even exit.

so a FFP scope covers the target usually when the power is cranked. now i dont adjust the windage / elevation with the turrets like a target shooter would. things change way to fast. so we learn what to hold over and what amount to hold into the wind. this retical in the covanant scope has been one of the best on a cheeper scope. however now im lookin to step up. i need something with much better glass, and a retical like the covanant, but in SFP. my perfered power setting is 6 X actually for most work so i dont need something that is 35 x. 4x16 or 5x 16 is lots.

looking mostly for real world experiance, ive looked at scopes online until im so lost. arken looks to be what i want but nothing with that tree in SFP

help me out fellas. who has what and why.

Only options with SFP and good glass that don't break the bank, would be Element Optics HD 2-16x50 or HDLR 2-16x50. I don't have stock, but can get you a MIL version in about a week. MOA is several weeks out still, as the distributor is waiting for stock.

2nd the second focal plane scopes.
If you go to Vortex site you can filter in things like zoom levels, objective size, ffp or sfp, price etc…
This may give you some options through process of elimination.
Based on your criteria there are models of Vortex that come up.
From higher end to lower….Venom, Diamondback and Crossfire.

interesting he just mentioned what he doesn't need and what gets listed the one he does not want

I've found that Athlon generally has better prices than Vortex, for about the same quality glass. But I also have a Covenant-4 6-24x50 FFP that's really OK for targets.

Ironic that Robbie from Shooting Warehouse was the first reply to you, because that's who set me up with my Arken EPL4 4-16 on my 17 hmr.
It IS FFP but the christmas tree is FAR more useable, doesn't obscure the gophers. The glass clarity far exceeds anything else I've seen in that price range (think it was about $460'ish?)

I would highly recommend that optic, even though I can't help you with getting it.

He sent me a PM, and asked me what I had to offer from MY store, in SFP. He asked me to comment on THIS post. I NEVER try and sell stuff on people's threads - I did this becuase I was ASKED to comment. If you have a problem with me, please take it offline. I was just doing what I was asked to do.

thanks for the reply. i need a bit more of an xmass tree than that scope has. wonder if they would do a custom retical
I'm not aware of SFP scopes with "Christmas tree" reticles. Most SFP scopes that have holdover points are either like the ones I listed, or just a BDC-style reticle. But I don't sell everything, so many other brands might just have something that works for you.

i asked for his help. he sells scopes. all kindsa scopes. and i thank him for his help. he is probably one of the clossest shops to me aswell, and would prefer to spend my $$$ as local as i can. i also prefer to not spend my moneys in the big box stores if i can.

Bushnell nitro. Discontinued but still available. SFP. HASH marks aren’t as large as what you show. I bought mine on sale minimum $300 off. I have two 3-12x44 and one 4-16 x44. Larger than what I usually run but found I liked them and bought two more. Thinking of buying another in 2.5-10 x44.

I spent YEARS shooting gophers with cheapo Tasco 3-9x scope with a MIL Dot reticle on our 22 rimfire rifles. Basically we pretty much always left those scope on 9x.

After yeoman service, I have replaced the Tasco's with Bushnell Elite 3200 fixed 10x scopes with MIL Dot reticle. The 3200 is long out of production but has been replaced with the Elite Tactical LRS 10x40 which is very similar. These scopes are very well priced. They are an absolute steal for what you get.

There are several benefits to fixed power scopes.
- They are cheaper.
- They are more rugged cause of no moving glass parts.
- The image is typically much better because there are fewer lenses for the light to pass through.
- They make range estimation easier because you see the same sized image all the time.

I never had issues using a simple MIL Dot reticle for longer distance holdovers and windage. I find the x-mass tree reticles to be way too busy. Give a MIL Dot reticle a try and I bet you like it.

This is the Bushnell Elite Tactical LRS. I cannot recommend this scope enough for a rimfire rifle.

For my centre fire varmint rifles I ended up going with fixed 16x target scopes. First off, I had a couple of the Tasco SuperSniper fixed 16x with MIL Dot reticle. Then I upgraded to a couple of Sightron S3 16x scopes with MIL Dot reticle. I took those scopes out to 2000 yds on a souped up 243 Win.

Once again, a fixed power scope is less expensive, more rugged, has better image quality and really helps with range estimation cause you see the same magnification image all the time. After a while I could lie down, spot a gopher and estimate the range within about 20 yds every time.
