In my case, I need some matches that are close enough to drive to in a reasonable amount of time.

When I move back to Ontario, I hope to travel around to some of the comps.

More promotion? Show that a big bank account isn't needed to get started. Some rifles that can be rented out to new competitors?

true we need a class for factory rifles only

small prizes and small entry fees

I like unknown ranges

OK..I know I harp on this every time the topic comes up..but..

We NEED to get the events section organized into provincial boards.

I said it before and I'll say it again, rookies or even people who are in one sport and want to try another have trouble figuring out what event is where the way it is now. Unless you are already "in the loop", the only way to guess at where match is is to look at the lcoation of some of the posters in the event thread.

Break it down. Have a Forum under event for each province. Have a sticky in each province that is a list of clubs in that province.

I cant imagine it adding that much overhead to the Mods daily workload.

Make it easier to find the events, then maybe more people will attend.

I agree!!!

also take my threegun matches the whole point is to get a new shooter to shoot and have the time of his/her life!!

I do NOT score myself unless we have a Master Class we had three shooters come out a place in the top three and all went home with prizes from OneShotTactical!!they are comming back for more:dancingbanana:

Advertise. Take out an add in a local paper you will probably at least get some interested observers and perhaps flush out a few "been thinking about it", types.

When is your next thee gun BTW...LOL!

I agree with the ads too. But would an affordable (read small) ad in a local paper be effective? I don't read the local rag, it's just firestarter for my fireplace LOL!

How about you email the ORA promo guy. He might have some ideas.

Strikes me that Factory F Class (as I see it described on the ORA website) is pretty good formulae for entry level participation.

I agree with getting the word out... I would like to get into competition, but I have no idea about how to get started... I have a rifle... I think I can make it go about where I want... now how do I get involved...

I think the provincial threads are a great idea... The ORA website isn't all that helpful.

I should also add that there needs to be some local/regional mentorship...

As an example, now that I have a rifle... and can usually get decent groups at 100 and 200m... where do I go from here... How do I know how good I have to be at these ranges in order to compete? ... I haven't been able to find out how to shoot beyond that range (ie reading wind, adjusting scope, etc)... the internet has taught me about shooting position, breathing, stock weld, trigger control, and follow through... but I fear the basics aren't good enough to compete at longer ranges... I found an organization that runs courses, but the courses are in the neighbourhood of $1000... and for someone who is just starting out... that's a little much...

I guess what I'm saying, is that once people know that competitions exist, there needs to be people who are willing to guide/teach beginners and help them become integrated into the world of competition.

i think the events idea for each province is a good idea, i've never shot competition before, but would like to try it out, i just moved out to edmonton, so i'm assuming there would be lots of competitions out here, i just have to figure out how to get involved, thanks guys for all of your info, Will.

The rifle rodeo fraternity got ourselves orginized last year so that a provincial agg trophy could be commpeted for.
This way wees can get more shooteers to each of the three different matches.
I have been in contact with another club that is interested also, so maybe we can get it tto where it was years ago,
with upwards to 8 or 10 matches!:dancingbanana:

Advertizing and orginizing helps, word of mouth is one of the best ways.
get a friend out and shhow 'em just how much fun it can be!:dancingbanana:

Ebruder - are you in Southern Ontario? If so, I heard that the ORA ran training last winter that sounds just like you are looking for, some theory and some practical one on one experience with guys that shoot long range. Not sure what they charged but it sure didn't sound like a lot. From talking to those guys it seemsthey are committed to just what you suggest, helping people get started in the game. They also have 'starter days'. Suggest you contact their Promo guy thru their website (sorry, I don't have his email).

Thanks for all your input guys!

I've been watching the ORA web sited all last season, and there wasn't anything like these training sessions that are there now...

Figures.... I make a comment about how the ORA website wasn't helpful... and it turns out that is exactly what I was looking for!

Blackthorne, I think you hit the nail on the head!!! I tried to get involved in long distance type shooting here in Alberta only to give up in frustration after several trips out to a vacant range. It's like a secret society that everyone knows exists but no-one talks about!!

Have a Buddy Class- Each competitor brings a tyro (new) shooter. Points of tyro and senior shooter combined for seperate prizes. Allow senior shooter to shoot first, with tyro at his side, then coach tyro through his relay.

Have a Buddy shoot- if a tyro is brought along, have discounted entry fee, or require a tyro for your own points to count.

Have additional prizes for bringing a tyro.

Require senior shooter to offer use of his equipment to his tyro.

Cheers,

Ben

'Be nice if more (private)facilities were available/existed too...
The only places you can get any half decent ranges ie beyond 200yrds are DND ranges and they're not accessable without long advance booking and a ton of paperwork.

Lots of points made here - real reasons and suggestions from real people.

Now it's up to present participants to decide if they truly do want more competitors and to do something about it. It would be easy to just dismiss the many points made and do nothing. That would make this a sad waste of time, and just confirm that the old boys are quite happy with things the way they are.

I see the major barriers as being:

- poor communications. What's it all about in layman's terms? If events are advertized, that's not reaching potential recruits, just exisiting participants
- no strategy seems to exist to engineer a progression from: interest piqued in a potential recruit, getting them to show up for the first (factory) match and having it a positive experience, through to having them come back again and again and becoming the next full-blown F-Class regular. Some sort of apprenticeship program?

A lot of talk here about not knowing about when or where the competitions are held. Have a look at the DCRA web page. There is a link to every PRA. Contact your PRA Rep and find out more.

If you look halfway down the Long Range/Precision Shooting Competitions page you will see the Cedar Springs Club Championship advert for last Sept.
I offered "No Guest Fee", free ammo for .308 shooters and no target pulling for a price of $75 for two days of shooting. I had ZERO takers from CGN in Ontario. I don't know what more I could have offered to get shooters out.

new shooters

Every discipline has the same problem. I shoot trap and other clay target games and people are reluctant to come to shoots because they can not compete on a high enough level . Recently I talked with some guys that went to a .22 shoot in hunter class where scopes are allowed. They were new to this and got their butts kicked badly at their first match. The results are they have lost interest in these shoots.
My point is this. I am new to this long range shooting and although I have some basic skills taught to me in the army, I can in no way compete with most of you in a long range competition.
However if you were to set up a clinic for new shooters to learn the skills required and what to expect at a match. Also to talk with some shooters about guns for this game before I spend a wack of cash on something I will regret.
I would gladly pay for something like that. Even if I didn’t get involved in long range shooting it is a day at the range with no pressure. Sounds like fun and I might learn something
Just my .02 cents worth
