I was at the range and I accidently fired some .45 GAP ammo in my friends Sig that is chambered for .45 ACP (40 rounds to be exact :redface:). It fired but I saw about 6-7 mis-feeds and stove pipes.

My question is this.......do you think there could be any damage to the bbl of the Sig?
 
45 GAP is shorter than a 45 ACP, probably explains the misfeeds.

Stove pipes were probably because the GAP has a different exctractor cut.

Max pressure GAP is the same as STD press. ACP

I doubt the gun is damaged.

Bottom line is its still a 45 cal.

My 2 cents worth.....
 
These guys don't know what they're talking about. I'll tell you right now, it's ruined. Send it to me, and I'll dispose of it properly. I'll even pay shipping, and reimburse you the scrap value.

About as much damage as firing 38special in a 357mag

I don’t know about that....45GAP must be a higher pressure round than ACP since the case is shorter but the velocity is about the same...probably a few thousands psi higher...

45GAP is the same pressure as 45ACP+P. I'm sure it is just fine in a SIG.

Yeah, but...

.38/.357 headspace on the rim, .45 acp and GAP headspace on the case mouth. So while there may not be pressure damage, the shorter. .45 Gap bullet may have hit the lead/throat at an odd or random angle. Probably not an issue for a few rounds, but over time, this could cause a buildup of bullet material that would make chambering .45 acp difficult.

OK Sherlock... I need to hear this story...40 rounds with 6-7 misfeeds & stove pipes before you realized you had the wrong ammo... :p ... FOUR MAGS!!!:D:p:p:eek::runaway: :slap:

Obviously, if the GAP round went off, it headspaced on the extractor.;)

Why would the GAP round hit the throat an a random angle? The gap round is shorter, not skinnier. Headspace holds the round front to back, not side to side.

You are right, it was late. I was trying to describe the condition common to .357, .44mag and .22rf chambers when shorter rounds are used.
 
I too, am eager to here some PLAUSIBLE REASON why someone would violate a safety rule and use ammunition that is clearly labelled as being a different cartridge to that engraved on the side of the firearm.

In this case, everybody seems to be okay, which is a good thing. We are all human beings, capable of mistakes, but...

It could have been serious injury, or death, with different cartridge / firearm screw up.

This is in my mind the key issue here.

because mistakes happen? I've seen much worse happen from people of very very high skill sets and knowledge.
