So I'm looking for a nice light rifle, with enough punch to hunt what I want, but will also see range time, just because. I'm pretty settled on a standard .30 caliber. So it will either be a .308, or .30-06. The choices above are available to me, as there is somthing about each one that I like, but none are perfect. They will all certainly do the job, but each has a certain trait that I like, and cannot decide on which model I will like best. Truth be told, I think I would like any of them, once I get it home, and can probably do no wrong. The catch is, this is going to be my last purchase for some time, so I want one that I will be satisfyed with, desiring nothing else. I kind of, sort of promised the wife my last one was, well my last one. I'm getting rid of a couple though, so that counts, right? It will fire a 180 grain bullet, probably a Partition. I want to keep recoil down, as to make it headache friendly. And i wan't to keep the weight down, as to make it bad knee friendly too. The only synthetic stock option was on the Browning. I used to have one in '06, and really liked it. Otherwise, I love the look and feel of a nice wood stock. So, given these perameters, in a deer rifle, that will be used on the occasional moose and perhaps elk, what do you think?

If your looking for a 30cal in a Browning, I would suggest that the short action (.308) and a Leupold 2x7 makes a nice combo. I have one in 22/250 with that scope and it fits very well, is light, and would be easy on the head in .308.

.

I was fondling a compact the other day in wholesale. I've decided I want one, but I wouldn't get one in anything bigger than 7-08, and probably no bigger than the .260. So if you're set on a 30 cal, I guess I got nothing. I do like the compacts though,.

one gun for hunting , range shooting ??????
u want some thing with knock down power for hunting and
something that don't pound the hell out of u at the range.
there is a new 308 that has more power than the -06.
with the price of powder going up, i would stick with the
308. more shots to the pound. i would buy the snythetic
stock and since its hollow u can add a few lbs in the stock
for target shooting and no recoil.
.02 cents worth

Your knee won't know the difference between the recoil of a heavy rifle or a light weight rifle.
The recoil will be the same no matter which rifle you buy. The felt recoil, on the other hand, won't be with a light weight rifle. Using a lighter bullet will help some. A 165 grain hunting bullet is ideal for either the .308 or.30-06.
If you want lower felt recoil for either, go with a semi-auto hunting rifle. The gas operation drops the felt recoil considerably.

oh great and wise sunray, lets hear your shoot experience with bad knees! please? it DOES make a HUGE difference! over the last 3yrs I've had 4 major surgeries on my knee. you will notice every ft.lb of that recoil, and it WILL effect your shooting. it has been a very humbling experience as I have seen my off hand and kneeling shooting go to #### post op and have to fight to maintain it.

You know, I realize that, but at the same time, I never thought of that. Kneeling and sitting with my elbow on knee are my two favorite shooting positions. I'm getting more and more depressed. This is going to be a real pain in the arse, I can see it now.

.................I can't believe nobody else caught that???!!!:D

.................Maybe everybody tonight is in a good mood and being polite.:D

Actually I've heard of this new cartridge. It has the tragectory of a phase two plasma rifle, carries the energy of a Freightliner doing 250 plowing into a cement wall and recoils like a .22 LR. But it's only available in a singleshot, and I'm looking for a bolt. :p

Wow' I wasn't expecting to be in the majority with the M77. Very nice rifles, very under-rated. They're extremely well-build with a superb fit and finish. They feel much more 'serious' than any of the others, particularly the tikka which feels like a toy (at least you had the taste to go with the walnut/blued 'hunter' version though)
