500 is as close to reasonable or practical as there is in your list. The 577 and 600 are throwbacks to a very bygone era where there was no replacement for displacement. Today's true fighting rifles are the 470 NE in doubles and the 458 Lott and 505 Gibbs in bolt guns. I've always wanted a 505 Gibbs but have never had the opportunity at one.

That 470 is still working in the hands if Andrew Dawson, owner of Chifuti Safaris. But I also heard a lot of snickering when the topic of Capstick came up.
 
There ya go BUM, the 505 you always wanted...........personally I prefer the 470 NE or in a bolt gun the 450 Ackley or 470/375 H&H. Both have superfluous power and a CZ or Brno will hold 5 under and 1 up unlike the 505 Gibbs which only hold 3 under and don't do anything better than the aforementioned cartridges.

True, but it's partly the fuddish nostalgia of the Gibbs. The same reason I shoot a 416 Rigby instead of the skinnier Remington version.

BUM......I shoot a Rigby too............"416 Remington" just doesn't roll off the tongue like "416 Rigby", does it? Used to have a 416 Taylor, super efficient cartridge.

Again, if it was all about common sense it would be the Taylor all the way and 10 year old pick ups, not cavernous Rigbys and Ferraris.

I'd love to have one, but might need someone to carry it for me. Besides I have to get past the 1/2" level before jumping right in.

I place the blame for coveting a .577 squarely on Ross Seifreid. Its all his fault.
 
I don't hunt anything that requires more than my 9.3's or a .45/70 @ max... and frankly those critters don't "require" even that much... my .45/120 is just for giggles... which is what any of these cartridges being discussed would be... giggles.
 
The biggest guns aren't about killing better, they are for hitting something so hard that it might change its mind about stepping on you even if you don't kill it. That's why they call them "Stoppers" not "Brainers".

When situations have gotten that bad, Might is better than nothing.
