OK - now that the seasons over its time to record what went right and what went wrong with regards to shooting at your big game. I only got a nice doe this year but it was a one shot kill at 194 meters (laser ranged) steep down angle with my 6.5 swede. Bullet strike went through both lungs and clipped bottom part of the spine. Deer dropped right there. How about the rest of you? - Did you shoot well this year or could it have been better? Time to fess up.:)

I only shot once this season.

157 yards into the neck....no complaints..;)

My daughter took the first deer in our household this year. This fat - "tasty looking" in her words - spike mule deer made the mistake of walking out in front of our stand. At just over 200 yards she threaded a 165 grain Partition - launched at 2600 fps from her .308 - through his ribs. He wobbled at the shot and was stone dead by the time we walked up to him.

I personally just filled my last deer tag last Wed. :D

Deer #1 was a fork-horn flag-tail taken at what I measured later at 360 yards. I held a bit too high and placed the bullet through his spine. He dropped on the spot as can be imagined and was dead before he hit the ground.

Deer #2 was a large-bodied - +/- 275 pound - 3X3 Mulie. The shot was from 180 yards and was a texbook perfect double lung broadside. He never jumped or kicked at the shot and I had though I may have missed until he started to wobble and dropped to the ground 30 - 40 feet from where he was hit. Both lungs were soup and the top of the heart was gone.

Deer #3 was a mature mulie doe of 175 pounds or so. The shot was from 240 yards and again was a double lung broadside. She gave a good jump at the shot but actually went ~150 yards after the shot before she kneeled down and died. Once again both lungs were totally destroyed although the heart wasn't touched.

All 3 deer were taken using a 300 wsm shooting 165 grain Accubonds @ 3100 fps.

Lets have a look:
3 animals taken,
1st, A Wolf, trotting quartering away at 80+ yards, bang flop.:)
2nd, Bull Moose, my load shot WAY higher than what the rigid irons are set for, in panic mode to stop him before he got into much thicker timber I shot over his back at 150 yards:redface: , second one did not miss when my brain kicked back into gear!:) :)
3rd, Whitetail Buck at 250yards, quartering towards, one shot right where I aimed. He was a "Dead Deer Running" for 40 some yards and piled under a tree.:) :) :)

Even with the miss on the Moose I am not dissappointed. I had just sprinted down a trail with lots of logs I had to jump to get to where I could see him, and I had no time to settle down for the shot, nor a rest. I was really excited but I felt dead steady and never second guessed myself. I would have done the same thing if the opportunity presented itself again.
Too bad 'ol Nugget can't keep up to me when I start to running so he could have gotten better footage.:p

I was suprised I hit the wolf, not having a very big window to shoot through when she came out into the open.

The Deer I felt a bit intimidated at the shot as I've never hit one at that range before. That's where saying a little prayer before hand helps settle the nerves!;) I don't remember wanting a specific buck before so for me the pressure was on to perform, after all they say you are your own worst critic right?

A medium-sized whitetail buck trotted into view and stood broadside about 60 yards from my blind, totally relaxed. I took careful aim, had all the time in the world, wasn't any more excited than usual (which is still pretty buzzed!), squeezed carefully...and COMPLETELY MISSED AN ADULT DEER STANDING MOTIONLESS AND BROADSIDE AT 60 YARDS!!!:runaway:

WTF???

Amazingly, the buck just stood there looking as stupid as I felt. A second shot center punched him and dropped him in his tracks.

The next day I found the nice round hole at the edge of the shooting window in my homemade permanent wooden blind. The short barrel on the slug gun I was using was actually inside the blind (thought that it was awfully loud!) and the slug clipped the window frame and headed off for parts unknown.

If I was standing face to face with any of you guys I doubt that I would have admitted any of this.

New gun this year (270wsm) shot it lots before the season. Results were: 1: non-trophy sheep at 365 yars, first shot dropped her, she tried to get up quartering to me, second shot dropped her for good. On recovery, 1st shot hit her in the spine just behind the shoulder, second shot dead center in the shoulder. 2: Ptarmigan at 100 yards, aimed head, hit base of neck. 3: WT buck at 100 yards, hit right where I aimed, got both lungs and top of heart, deer went 50 yards and fell.

I only Fired 1 shot at an animal this season....so far;)
Wasn't 100% happy with the shot as the Whitetail Buck was slightly quartered towards me and I had to put the shot in the shoulder.
However the Bullet (a 125gr partition from my 260 at about 200meters ) performed flawlessly, broke through the shoulder, took out the tops of both lungs and the heart, then exited out the offside ribcage leaving about an 1-1/2" exit wound.
Lost a minimal amount of meat from the broken shoulder but all in all not a bad outcome, considering.
The Buck leaped straight up and dropped in his tracks :)

I've shot two so far.
The buck was shot with a 150grain Sierra pro hunter. Blew the crap out of the off side shoulder, lost most of it.
The doe was shot with the 44-40. Eat the hole if you like, no meat loss.

One of the guys shot a buck with buckshot, and slugs... He blew the crap outtta just about everything he's been on dry spell for quite a few years, got just a bit excited.
Then there was the fawn we got, wasn't much to start with, and the exit through the ass, well, it was pretty much hamburger.

I shot 3 this year, and missed one, all using the trusty .300 Savage.

1st doe was taken at about 60 yrds as she was running by. It was getting close to dark, I was in a bunch of trees in the middle of a field. 1st shot broke her back, then another shot in the head (hate seein em suffer)

2nd doe/1st buck was a total fluke. Was freezing my ass off, started walking back into the house bout 8am on the inaugural Sunday morning hunt. Turned the corner on an old bush road and a nice size doe was standing on the road looking at me. I had no shot on the front shoulder so aimed high on the neck. She dropped right there. As I was walking up to her a spike-horn buck came out of the bush, and I shot him in the front shoulder, he also went down in a crumpled heap. :dancingbanana:

My miss came about 2pm one sunny afternoon. Walked out to the hydro line and there was 2 already on the line waiting for me. Missed high both shots, then the deer flicked its tail at me and took off. Dont know what all that was about.

All in all it was a great year, not only for filling the freezer but spending time with my brother and grandparents. When we werent hunting, we were either cutting wood or playin cards. Great week away from work!

Shot 3 this year
X-bow button buck went 75 yds
50cal smoke pole 11pt buck at 70yds went 30 yds and piled up
50cal again big doe at 65 yds went 65 yds

Barnes 250gr worked awsome again not complaints here.

This little fellow stuck his head out at about 40yds. All I could see was his head and he saw me the same time I saw him.

100gr Hornady (257Roberts) entered his mouth and exited the back of his neck. Bang/flop!!

Mine was exactly the same shot. I walked up to it and shot it in the neck to finish the buck off.

deer and moose

Was lucky to shoot at a deer and a moose this year, here's the results:

First, my first moose Buck :D , that I shot at +-50ft twice 30 deg angle almost broadside and slowly walking towards me. First shot through the boiler, he didn't budge at all, second shot, same position again in the chest and now he decided to take a impressive sprint and I hit him again running quartering away at close to 250ft, the bullet strucked below the hump to finish in the opposite outside shoulder, he then stopped, turned completely broadside, the perfect postal card, he looked at the sky and flipped over on his back :dancingbanana: . After the second shot, when he went for a run, I look at my rifle and  wtf, he should be down I said to myself but they sure are tough critters, he was hit in the hart and liver but he didn't seem to have realized it yet  .

For this hunt, I had use myTikka 7MMRM with 160gr Accubond.

Second, it was my first deer with my Black Powder gun this year, a nice doe at +- 70ft almost broadside but as I took the shot she jumped and I hit the rib cage low, took part of the sternum bone out with a 3" exit hole, had to finish her with another shot to the head, it was not needed but I always try to end the suffering as quick as possible in respect to the game.

Tradition ML loaded with 120gr 777 loose powder and a Nosler Partition 300gr sabot.

It was a terrific hunting season for myself, we are blessed to be able to hunt in our backyard (country). :D

Our season in Ontario is not over yet. We still have a controlled hunt going this week for deer, regular season for deer and archery season runs until Dec. 31.

My season thus far 3 deer, 45-50 Canada Geese, and a whack of ducks.

Deer #1

Shot with Excaliber Crossbow, 20 yds, got both lungs and deer went 60 yds.:D

Deer #2

Shot with 6.5x55mm Swede, 28 yds, head shot, bang/flop:dancingbanana:

Deer #3

Shot with Excaliber Crossbow, 15 yds, hit a little high and ended up getting the spine:redface: , dropped right away but had to finish it with the Grohmann.

Hope to get a couple this week in the controlled hunt, with the shotgun, if not I will be back to the Crossbow until the end of Dec., I still have 2 additional seals:cool: .
