its true just like ignition keys to most vehicles
i have about 4 differnt key rings of car keys that if i tried i could get into and start at least 1 vehicle on a lot
Cool, I have 5-6 locks that need keys!

Master locks only have a few different keys. The keys have 3 didgets on them, I have seen about 8 different numbers on the keys. If you have some friends that have Master locks bought around the same time they will probably have a key that works. A friend and I have 2 locks keyed alike (250 & 336) I have 4 keyed in 250 all bought at different times.

well you can drill it out or try a few different number keys / use a screw driver and pop it open or if the triger gaurd can come off just take it off and the lock will fall off then

A lond time ago I sat in on a class at the Police College. The instructor asked a recruit from the rear of the class to come up and put a trigger lock on a model 10. When the student was finished he was asked if it was safe and told to go back and sit down, before he reached his seat the instructor had the master lock off and put a empty shell with a live primer in the
revolver and pulled the trigger. I knew what was going to happen and still almost fell out of my seat. The instructor used a small jewellers screwdriver with the shank bent at 90 degrees which he gave to me after the class was over. I usually take a minute or so to take them off and it lives in my cleaning kit and I can`t tell you how many times I have removed locks at the hunt camp. Hope this helps and find somebody with the same key number and then you are back in business.

Everyone is talking about how easy it is to "pick" one of these locks... try this... install the lock properly - good and tight... it isn't so easy now...

Seriously, it the lock is on very tight, using a straight tool like a screwdriver, you will have a lot of difficulty trying to find and engage the little pad and then move it so you can pull the lock apart.... and then try doing it without marking up the trigger guard.

Try it.

go see your local lock smith, the 3 digit code that others have mentioned could have over 1000 diferent bittings or cuts, the steel arround the key way is harder than a liberals heart, you could dremmel or drill the pin stack/bible, much easier to call a locksmith and have a pro open it or impression or code cut u a new key, good luck with a knife blade or similar tool, a smith should be able to pick this lock in 30 seconds, bring a box of doughnuts, best regards moose.

Had this happen to me before,i took the trigger guard screws out and removed the trigger guard..the lock cam with it!! off in seconds!!
On a rifle with a fixed trigger guard, i'd just drill it out and get a new one..

Slighty off topic, but is there a trigger lock out there that a child cannot pick? all the ones I have seen offer no security :(

If a child has the cognitive ability to pick a lock, proper training of respect for firearms will do FAAAR more than a simple trigger lock.

trigger lock

I did the same thing. My new 30-06 stailess lh Ruger mark II in the bush and of no use to me. Now all of us have the same lock number-keyed alike Master locks. One of us will remember his key.

Lost my keys one time as well, nothing the 5" grinder couldn't handle. Cut the end off of the tumbler case, it just falls apart.
+1 on the combo locks!

FYI, you shouldn't drill a pin tumbler lock by drilling the keyway. The proper method is to drill directly above the keyway, just BELOW the shear line. You want to eat the TOP pins, NOT the BOTTOM pins (the ones that touch the key). If you drill the bottom pins, you may still have a hard time opening the lock because a top pin is still obstructing the sheer line. You should also count the pins as the drill chews them up, and stop when you hit the last one (four in this case). Drill too far and you risk damaging the cam, the plug will simply spin 360 inside the lock body without disengaging the actual locking mechanism. This applies more towards other locks, but be careful just in case.

Anyone with a lost combination triggerlock combo, visit a locksmith if you don't want to dial it 1000 times. If they are anything like I am, they will do it at no cost other than a second or two fondling your gun, and you will learn a neat trick on how to open most combination locks at the same time :D
