Found these on a morning walk around a local Lake in the Cowichan Valley.
They dive for their food.

In water they look like this...

Almost out of the water they look like this...(note the greenish legging)

So what are they?
:D

American Coot ... not worth a Hoot to Shoot !!!! :D
Also known as "Mudhens" )

Yep a coot, BUT they are damned good eating. I shoot a couple of limits for gumbo every year. More tender than duck and with excellent flavor if they are breasted and all the fat is removed (gotta clean them right away though).

I'd shoot a lot more of them if they'd fly.:50cal:

And yeah, I'd rather eat them than a tough livery goose. I had all my goose breasts turned into hotdogs this year and they are indistinguishable from store bought lips and a$$holes. That means the kids love them.

I do not think they are coots for sure. However, I have not idea what they may be. The bill is definately not that of a coot.

Yes they are, american coots.

It's the "mudhen" remark that got me.

We call Great Blue Herons "mudhens" up here, first I've heard coots called that but who really cares.

Coots for sure, and we always called them mud hens as well. They were always considered to be in about the same category as B.C.'s "squawfish"...easily available, but pretty much unfit for consumption, so I've never actually eaten one. Guess I shouldn't dismiss them entirely as table fare if I haven't even tried them though!

The comments about quick dressing and TOTAL fat removal are important if you wish to eat these birds! The first time I tried one, I was unaware of the proper way to care for them, and found them very distasteful. However, once I did it right, it was good to eat. Regards, Eagleye.

Coots YEP! Not ducks like someone posted earlier. ALSO KNOWN AS MARSH HENS, MARSH CHICKENS, OR already mentioned, MUD HENS... WHY.. Take a look at their feet.... Not webbed, look just like big o'l CHICKEN LEGS..... the chicken like bill is another reason for the chicken/hen nicknames.. C'mon boys GET WITH THE PROGRAM.

Some of you guys remind me of that Stupid Game Warden back in NB years ago driving his boat up the Nerepis river with the Big Stupid Frenchmen RCMP hanging with him (Needed a gun back then. Wardens did not carry, so during enforcement ops they always had a RCMP along) Anyway there I was with some Teal's and a Wood duck. Well didn't the retard hold up the MAle (COLORFUL) DRAKE and claim that it was a Coot (which at the time was actually illeagle to shoot) and tried to have me charged! WHAT A FREAKEN RETARD THAT GUY WAS. I stood my ground and SAID NO WAY PAL, YOUR A GAME WARDEN AND YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW YOUR SPECIES? He tried to get the big Frenchy on board, but he just went Daa,, Huh, I donno know... and shrugged his shoulders.

Man I was only 16 years old. Dumb asses....
