And keep yer hands where I can see 'em.

I am looking on another thread watching the sorcerers putting together an M1. I am not a builder...but I am thinking I want to be! How hard is this to do? I know anyone with minor ability can put together a fine AR15...but does the same go for Garands? I was going to build up a Norc M14 awhile back but just got disgusted with it and sold it off before it became a money pit.

I am seriously thinking about a Springfield or an LRB ... but can a guy build a national match Garand the same way the AR15 guys do? How does a newbie go about doing this? What should I put on my shopping list and who should I buy from? Can anyone provide a quick 'how to' lecture on this?

Your two bits is, as always, sincerely appreciated.

I've done it.

However, be ready to fork quite a bit of money. Mine with a Boyds stock + new barrel and bolt ended up costing over 1800$ including all the shipping, refinishing and brokerage.
I was at 2100$ before reselling the reaming tools + headspace gauges.

You should start to look at the ''harder'' to find parts. Action, barrel, bolt, Operating rod.

Take a look at barrel installation videos on youtube. It'll give you an idea about what's involved.

I've done lots and lots of builds. And you guys are right, some parts are more expensive and some parts are even more scarce.

We can all agree that this is an expensive proposition but well worth it for the learning process. And also for the pride in the ownership.

There is nothing like holding a finely built M1'while watching Band of Brothers DVD boxed set or Grand Torino and yelling, "Get off my lawn..." :D

When you build a shooter with a medium profiled Douglas barrel and cloverleaf the 168's at 100m , it's very satisfying. :)

If you want a serious project, I would start with a complete donor rifle since the harder to find parts are ALL present from the start and then I would proceed with replacing the barrel right away since Hirsch Precision has Krieger barrels for the M1 in stock as I write this. Then I would install that first. Now the rest of the build is more straightforward. Piles of articles by American shooters on rebarrel ing and tuning these fine projects.

After changing the barrel, I would change the wood and order a Boyd's unfinished walnut stock so that I can glass bed that baby. Remember that glass bedding a finished rifle is counter productive since the Devcon wants to adhere to the wood fibers.

After I glass bed , I will start tuning the front end of the gas system.

Well if you want to learn how to play with this fun , I have arranged a clinic in Burlington at BRRC for Sunday 30 March 2014 and I am now set up to install barrels with the assistance of my girlie Tacoma truck. :)

I hope I shed some light on this build topic.

Cheers and keep helping dem noooobs here

After that great spiel by barney, complete with Gran Torino references, where to find available parts, and details on a clinic and you're deciding to go with an m14 instead. For shame lol. Just kidding, maybe it will inspire someone else to build a M1.

Not to correct you but it is a M1, and not a M1A. Regardless of the fact, whatever clint holds in anger, gives people the feeling they messed with someone they shouldn't have messed with.
