okay guys, I've decided on one of two calibers...just need help to pick the rifle.

Since you were asking about the type of rifle, I suggest a 700, so you can fix it up later when funds allow.

Forget the huge "x50mm" scope. They are big, heavy and require you to lift you face off the comb to see through it. A smaller scope (like a 2x7 Leupold) as low to the bore as possible is much more comfortable to shoot.

fair enough comment on the 50mm optics. I just like the thought of more light for better image and resolution.

that said, did see a decent looking Parker Hale Safari in .243 for under $300...

Rally Sport, eh TB? does that mean I get to walk faster carrying it cause it's so light or sumfin? :D

thats the best deal youll find on a new .25-06, youll be able to recoup it easily if you ever decide to sell it. i dont think they even make the RS models anymore.

Nice find, great suggestion. You'll be a little over budget, with taxes and shipped. But, tb is also right in my opinion, make a little more, save a little more and get a rifle that will be a 'keeper'.

One of my 25-06s was a Ruger and it shoulda been a 'keeper'.:redface:
 
and damn...I just saw the stock on a Howa Ultra Light in .308....gosh it's gorgeous!

can anyone lend me some $$$?

btw, does anyone know of other Howa retailers in Canada side form the bit of stock FrontierTaxidermy has? I'd like to see what one of those M-1500's kits with the Leupold VX1 are going for.
 
Well - That beat old Parker Hale may have more features than the other rifles you mention:

- iron sights
- walnut stock, with a man size fit.
- detachable mag. (maybe..)
- adjustable trigger
- CRF
- polished and true blued finish
- no plastic gun parts!

Seriously, you have to assess the features you want, and then physically try the rifle for fit. There has been more than one person on this board that has bought the wrong rifle due to "advice" issued from keyboards thousands of miles away.

I owned a parker hale 1100 lightweight in 243,and the one thing that I really hated about the gun was that I could not load rounds through the top at the range.Unless the round was fed from the magazine,the round would not chamber properly.

LOL at recommending my ex-gun! :cool::shotgun: FWIW, it was a good gun but I sold it to buy, guess what, a 25-06 M70. Yesterday at the range, my 87gr TNT made overlapping 3-shot groups (okay my friend shot it for me, I suck). 25-06 for sure.

well guys, it's kinda cool, but I met Rishu Pepper today...he came up with a friend n went bunny hunting with my brother (Crazy.kayaker). after a washout (literally, it stormed and rained on em all night) we went up to the Heffley Shooting Range. got to try out his M70 .25-06. not bad...tho I'm thinking I like the .243 better, LOL. was a cool outing. :)
 
Well - In the range of calibers you describe, you've chosen necked down cartridge cases (ie 243/308 25-06/30-06), presumably for velocity and recoil considerations. Why limit yourself to the smallest bullet dia and weights? A 25-06 is going to have tha same recoil as a 270 shooting the same bullet weight. If you go for the 270, or even better the 280, you have a much greater range of bullet weights to play with. Same with the 260 vs the 243...
Using this criterion, the 260 and 6.5X55 offer the best rangeability - 70 gr to 160 gr, good for anything in varmint class up to large game.
 
It sounds like you are set on buying NEW. There is much to be said for the sound and wise advice that has been offered up a few times to buy a quality used rifle. You are searching for the perfect kill anything, light recoiling critter zapper. It does not exist. What does exist is a crapload of calibres and cartridges that overlap each other through the entire spectrum. Recoil and/or muzzle blast seems to be an issue as the .25/06 was not your cup of tea and you enjoyed shooting the .243 more. There will come a time where you are more comfortable with the recoil and are in the market for a more potent chambering. You will likely not only buy one rifle and that is it forever.

I don't think you have decided on anything yet, BTW. :runaway:

Mr. Friendly, thanks for taking us up to the 800 yard range, I've never shot that long before, being a Lower Mainlander, and 'twas a lot of fun.

I agree with what cosmic said, 260 or 6.5 Swede would be my choice too. Boolit choices are better, and since you guys will start reloading, that's not gonna be a problem.

Personally, if I were to do it all over again, I'd get something in the 7mm range and be done with it (7WSM is something I'm looking at right now), but like the above poster says, this will likely not be your last centrefire, so don't fret too much about it. Get a gun that fits you, that you like, and go shoot it!
 
well, on HuntingBC.com, there was a thread where someone said they handled a Marlin XL7 and thought it was rather slick. I called the place he was at and they've ordered one in .25-06 for me! said it should arrive in about 3 or 4 days! :D

the guy was very surprised when I said he's about the only place in Canada that can get them...said that they're usually always among the last (probably because it's a small mom'n'pop style operation). it's gonna cost me a bit more then what others have them listed for, but heck, I'll have one!

maybe I can get some of all the low end model's (Savage, Stevens, Mossberg, maybe Remington) and do a comparative review from the viewpoint of a BEGINNER! :D

for those of you who are curious about what place is carrying them...it's Frank's Supermarket in Quesnel, BC. just google that and you'll get their phone number, or PM me and I'll shoot it off to you so you can inquire about getting one if you're so interested. they don't have a website, so you need to call and talk to one of the Dave's.
