So I think I want a 6.8 barrel/bolt for my xcr.

To do or not to do?

How easy is it to find dies, brass and ammo?
They use a .270 projectile right?

on a side note : post 1000!

I dunno man. Do you know anyone who got on board with the 8mm Rem? Great cartridge, awesome power, sweet ballistics, all that jazz. But it never caught on. Now there's a bunch of guys with guns that they can't find ammo for.

That's why I'm sort of leery of the 6.8 SPC, 6.5 grendel, and 300 blackout. Who knows if they'll still be here in five or ten years?

Congrats on your 1, 000th post. Good one, too! Brass, dies and bullets are easy to come by, so is load data although you have to look carefully for brass at times. Yes, bullets are .270 in the light weight range from 90 grs. to 130 although some guys use 150's. There is quite a selection in those bullet weights. Reloder 10X gives good velocities and accuracy. It is known to be an accurate cartridge and more and more guys are using them on deer.

I use this calibre in a Ruger Mini but am also building an AR upper. I think it is going to be around for some time. There are also a lot of bolt actions in use with this cartridge which is a good sign. However, that being said, who knows how long it will last? I just know for me it is an interesting cartridge with deer size game potential. It is fun to reload and has shown good accuracy. I say go for it! :D

Exactly,

I think it's a good cartridge and it is the best choice if you want to hunt with your XCR but it doesn't really seem to be catching on and the ammo is still a little expensive and not as easy to find.
I don't like that people compare it to the 270win though. When I look at the ballistics it looks more like a slight improvement over the 7.62x39

If you really like the XCR and want to hunt with it then I say go for it. If you are just going to punch bigger holes in paper and shoot gophers then I say spend the $700 on .223 ammo and mags.

Go for it! I can't believe that this round isn't more popular as it packs a lot more punch than 556/7.62X39 versions. I have hunted with 7.62X39 but wanted a little more punch. The 6.8 with 95 TSX's or 100 accubonds are killers, as for brass etc. there is no problem as several dealers have lots or components on hand. Don't know about factory ammo as have never looked for it.

Go 308... That'll be around for a long time
Have one already.

I wanted a mini in 6.8 before, but the availability of brass and rounds scared me off. Also, not knowing as much about the performance of it compared to .223 and 7.62x39mm had something to do with it as well.

I have the .223 already, been there done that. It will mostly be used to poke coyotes.

I've already been wary of a 6.8 in a dedicated platform, but having the modularity of the XCR makes it a little more viable i think.

Shot ym deer this year with the XCR in 6.8. Awesome damage and she dropped hard at 155+ yards. I find the ammo not very hard to find in Regina adn the price is decent. I plan on loading for my Mini in 6.8 and my custom M14 shortie for long range targets.

FWIW the 300 Whisper / 300 Backout has been around for over 25 years so it is hardly likely to suddenly disappear.

Caliber choice really depends on what you want out of the rifle. What you plan to use it for and expect performance wise will ultimately determine caliber and case.

tried to find a .300 whisper barrel for xcr.... no luck.

i don't think the .300 whisper is going anywhere soon.

With the Internet, it's unlikely a caliber will ever die off like it used to.

300 black is listed as option for XCR Micro's on RA's website, since it uses a shorter piston, it won't work on your rifle without chopping your upper and piston rod.

I actually saw a 300 blackout XCR at Shot Show this year. They had it with an eo-tech and a silencer. The barrel was machined specifically to accommodate the silencer coming back over it. Very very cool

Maybe contact RA directly. I have heard rumors of a 300 Blk conversion barrel.

I have a Rob Arms pamphlet from the shot show, and it does have the .300 whisper listed as an option but like hbean said, only for the mini.

I guess the obvious question would be what do you want it for? If the answer is hunting, then I say get it. CampCook has a 6.8SPC kit for his XCR and I don't think he's ever looked back.

I'll be using it for hunting mostly yes.

definately go with a 6.8 SPC if you are going to hunt with it, just take a look at Campcook's success with his 6.8 SPC.

both 300 blk and whisper mimics 7.62 X39 in trajectory, which takes huge nose dive beyond 300 yards, kind of limits your playing field compare with the 6.8 SPC

CampCook would be the gentleman to ask then.

:agree:
Another consideration is that you can actually get 6.8SPC factory ammunition (I picked some up through SFRC), and the RobArms 7.62x39 pistol magazines holds 10 rounds of 6.8SPC.

anyone know the ROT in the xcr barrels?

Just browsing ar15.com, looks like a lot of news about the 6.8 from the SHOT show, a lot of guys continuing with it and more ammo manufacturers making cheaper ammo.... Hopefully some of that will trickle UP here.
