Hey whats ya thoughts here gents,
early this morning about 9-10 degrees and i sent a few rounds toward the ol deers... what happened here?

i noticed the "smoke" from the varget 180gr loads seem to be more smokey than the 150gr loads with varget......... ones about 50grains and ones about 45 grains.

i could see straight after firing a 150gr load, but after shooting a 180gr load the smoke was quite alot more noticable---

anything to this??

Varget is not optimal for 180 grainers
but if that's all you have, go for it

thats all correct, though it doesnt give much as to why they smoked more, the combustion thing makes some sense though, there would be some different pressures in there im sure... ill keep an eye on it through development an see if it smokes more or less with more powder in it

have fun my friend
aside from archery 30-06 is my favorite rifle
I have more than one in the safe

More smoke usually means low pressure load. Powder burns cleaner and more completely as pressure increases.

Are the case necks sooty on the outside? That would also be telling you pressure is on the low side and increasing your load a bit might be good.

Hey Jet,
No! i didnt have the neck indication but that makes sense... it is reasonably low, an the early morning temp an all variables considered... that makes sense!

Sooty necks with medium speed rifle powders seem to start as you get below 35-40K psi peak pressure, depending on the brass, so you're likely still at or above that.
