I've got a customer i talked to who is interested in selling me his old 10/22. I just got my pal so have very little experience in what to look for when buying a used rifle. Was hoping to get a couple ideas on what generally "goes bad" or what to look for on an older rifle that he says he hasnt used in a really long time. Looked through the stickies and couldnt really find anything aboot this. Thanks for any help.

Old 10/22's are a prime example of "they just don't make them like that anymore". I would take it on a quick look over. Cycle the action & if it is smooth & overall the gun looks good & clean, buy it. Anything can be replaced on a 10/22 pretty cheap but the old, all steel, examples are hard to find. Mine is 1980 and I would never part with it.

ya the older ones are a step above the current ones put out by ruger.
the all metal trigger group is worth it in my opinion.

even if the gun has been shot 20,000 times the old ones are still better.
my 28yr old one is still purring like a kitten and id imagine i have 60,000 rounds down it.

plus 10/22's are the Lego of the gun world.
you can buy 30 different stocks for them if yours is dinged up.
you can pick up after market barrels from any gun store.
the mags and add on parts are everywhere.

you cant go wrong with picking up a old ruger 10/22
hell, i got out of my way to pick up old ones!

I would buy it even if its not working. Like wayupnorth said, they are like lego. The only part you really need is the receiver, everything else can be replaced with aftermarket parts to make it yours.

you dont even need the receiver any more as there are a lot of them around after market (Dlask makes a good one!)
my last winter project is made up of 100% after market parts.
but the price.... dont ask!

Pfft, no F'n way. Am I ever glad I ran into you! I saw Volquartsen had one but a bit expensive so I planned on buying a 10/22 on the 16th for $200...and in the end (after all mods) I would have only used the receiver. Would have replaced everything anyway. Thanks for that hint towards Dlask, never knew he existed. Now I'd rather just buy the receiver from him for $200 and support our local talent.

Really nice build btw, bet it runs like a champ too. I saw that trigget assembly somewhere online any chance it was less than Volquartsen's $260?

its a Kidd 2 stage.
so like $360 IF you can find them.

aside from the price of what i put into it i absolutely LOVE the gun.
i can site for hours and plink away with it.
in fact i was at the range today and my wife had to call me and remind me to come home for supper i got so lost in shooting it!

the coolest thing about building them is that you really get to know the inner workings of them.
im confident now that i could rip apart any 10/22 and put it back together or fix any failures that i may run into.
and that only comes from building, rebuilding, re-rebuilding, taking the gun down to change out one little bolt, re-re-rebuilding, ect ect ect
