Also, note that the left casings are considerably shorter. Fireforming? I don't think so.

If they were reformed to 8x57 they would have to be shorter. There have been a couple of times over the last 50 years when 8x57 bullets/cartridges and cases have been hard to find. The 30-06 cases have always been available and because of their size they are ultimately suitable for reforming.

By the way, there have been a lot of 8mm bullets shot down 30-06 bores without incident. As mentioned though doing this in a valuable semi auto may not be prudent. Swaging the bullets down .015 by shooting them down a .308 bore will increase pressures with steel core ammo and not so much with lead core ammo.

Done it lots. Reform to 8x57 that is. Just made sure I took the engraver and messed up the 30.06 designation on the base of the cartridge.

I am well aware of the differences between 30-06 and 8x57, having owned both for 50+ years. Simply, I meant to consider fire forming the left cartridges in a 30-06 - not in my rifle.

In the distant past, when 8x57 brass was hard to find, I sized 30-06 to use in 8x57 rifles. As soon as proper brass became available, I no longer used 30-06. To make things a little more complicated for myself, my main old hunting rifle was an 8mm/06. Jeez, then I was cooked. I had to use 30-06 brass. I am very careful about keeping those 8mm/06 loads separated from 30-06. :)

One of the "Rules" for cases made from other calibers is to obscure the headstamp. Unfortunately that seldom happens. Your observation skills have saved your butt. There is little to be gained by saving the rounds, as they are cast loads, with a bullet worth nothing for salvage.

If you have a vernier caliper you can probably sleuth out what they are meant to fit, just to satisfy your curiosity.

This is basic fireforming. 30-30 on left. Necked down 30-30 parent case to 7mm with new shoulder location. And 7-30 Waters after firing in the gun to fire form, then loaded again. I have many rounds of ammo with the WRONG headstamp in my reloading room. I pick up a lot of range brass and convert to my hearts content. Very fun.
