and heres the special one, written on one side ''.303 Caliber-British. Use .32 S&W Smokeless.'' and on the other side '' Winchester Rep. Arms Co. Patented Aug. 22. 1899 '' do you have any idea what this is?

Enjoy!

It is a sub caliber adapter. Allows pistol ammunition to be fired through a .303 rifle, for small game, etc. Nice that it is Winchester made and marked. Probably has some collector value.

old 303 cartridges

I've got a couple of 303 cartridges from 1912. a buddy from work brought over some old rounds he had gotten from his wife;s grandfathers house . he asked me to use my bullet puller so he could display a couple and yes I took apart a couple of rounds for him . it felt like I was doing something wrong takeing them apart as they were so old . he has small children so he did'nt want live rounds sitting on the mantel . they had cordite in them and it still burned . the rest of the rounds he gave me will never be taken apart . not by me anyways.

My friend's Dad had a No.4 that he had an auxiliary cartridge for. I think it used .32 rimmed centrefire ammo. We could buy a box downtown at the hardware for very little. It was agood setup for a couple of "big game" hunters in the making. That was in the early 60's or late 50's.

Sub-caliber round...

...appears loaded. You might want to tap it out. Check for corrosion. Mine was brass and had a corrosion ring around the end of the case mouth where the sub-caliber rounds ended.

That's kind of slick. Has a cartrige in it. .32 S&W ammo runs around $34.95 per 50. Remington loads it, for sure. I think Winchester still does too.

thats awesome! anyone else ahve one of those adaptors and ever fired it?

Just doing some research today. In the McLennan, McFeely, & Prior catalogue from 1935, they sold those adapters for $1.60. They were available in .30WCF, .30US, .30GOVT. 06, .303 SAVAGE, .303 BRITISH, .32WS, and .32-40 calibres. :D I had one in .300 Savage that shot .32ACP, it worked great. Really quiet.
