Which of these older actions is more desirable to use in a build the Sako l61R or the BRNO ZG47. Looking for things like smoothness of the bolt when operated, Reliability, Strength, and overall appeal. Thinking of putting a Classic old school rifle together for my father in .338-06 for his birthday. Nothing fancy just nice wood and blue with a good set of open sights.

His eyes aren't what they used to be... a low powered scope might be better... :)

I really liked the older Sako actions I have had ... either action would be fine... a very personal choice which would be "better".

Just simple.....classic lines, you could almost get away with getting a ZG47 and have the barrrel bored to 338-06. They have pretty good irons as is. They feed very nicely too. Cannot say for the Sako but I've never heard anything bad of them.

Any specific reason for 338-06?

The ZG-47s are great actions and cycle beautifully, a perfect base for a custom rifle.

If you go for the ZG-47 maybe include some Talley QD rings so he has the option of using a scope or the open sights.

One day I want to turn a gray rat ZG or 21 into a custom 9.3x62, I cannot think of a more perfect rifle.

His other guns cover pretty much all you would need to do with a rifle and he has mentioned this caliber peeked his interest

I think if I go ahead with this build I talked my mother into getting him a leupold 2-8x36mm scope for it.

Your farther is a lucky man...

I have one of those Sakos and just went to look at it. It is as I remember it. A very nice, slick action but it reeks "modern". I think the Brno would have a more classic look and feel.

Another option might be an 08 Brazilian or 09 Argentine 98 actions. Or one of the Husqvarna barreled actions from Trade EX

That is good enough reason for me! To have someone actually get you a gun that you want would be a great suprise, and in a ZG47 even better yet. They have a long mag well so you can seat the heavy projectiles way out and they still feed like glass.

At one time I had built a 338-06 of a model 81 Classic Parker Hale. It worked very well as a bear and moose basher.

One other advantage of using a ZG47 is the front sight is a barrel band sight which may leave you enough meat to rebore the barrel and be ready to shoot in a short time. The front sight blades are removeable so you can swap it out with various different ones made for the 550 until you are regulated to the ammo you use.
