Old Ballistic Tips - The Stories Are NOT Exaggerated!!!

Matching the bullet to the cartridge and target is the key, and as the op stated, the old bt's blew to h### when he hit bone with his fast cartidge. Personally, I want to have good penetration no matter what happens with the shot. My 30-06 with Hornady 165 BTSP's at 2700 fps were really accurate, mild recoil and dropped deer like a sack of potatoes whether through the ribs or shoulders, and not too much damage. Sped up 60 fps with different powder, they still were great but a little more damage. I wouldn't be so sure out of a 300 WM, I'd go heavier or to premium construction. What one man thinks is perfect performance, another won't be pleased with. Personally, I like pass through shots with blood spraying everywhere.

60 fps is about the same as getting 25 yards closer.

The original BTs were a bit "tender", but very accurate. I've shot several deer with the original 140 gr BT @ 2800fps from a 7x57 Mauser with good results. Ditto with the early 130gr BT from a .270 Win. In all cases, save for a neck shot taken on a deer partially obscured by low silver willows, shots were placed behind the shoulder. This brings up the old question; at what point in the death of the deer did the bullet fail?

The original Ballistic Tips were "Bombs", particularly if driven hard.
I used them for a few head of game in the 7x57, 270 and 30-06.
Found them to be too explosive for my liking, so went back to the Partition.
In more recent years, I have used a few 8mm, 180 Ballistic Tips in my 8x57, and they are pretty sturdy. They have exited on all 3 animals I have shot with them, and exits are not the kind that explosive bullets make. Mind, that is at 2800 fps, not 3200.
I sectioned one of these bullets, and they have a pretty thick jacket, particularly toward the rear. [FWIW, I still prefer the 200 Partition or Accubond]
My one 30-06 loves the 165 and 180 AB, so that is what I feed it.
I do not take Head or Neck shots unless I am very close and have no better options.
Regards, Eagleye.
