Old CIL / Dominion ammo box question

Hi Guys,

I picked up some old Dominion ammo for the collection today at a gun show. All boxes are from the late 20s and early 30s. Got 2 boxes of regular 44-40 black powder, one 44-40 hollow point (kinda neat), and one box of what is labeled 44 I.X.L Shot. The first three are like new, with inspectors papers in the box, the box of Shot is still sealed. Can anyone tell me what I.X.L. means and what this ammo was for???? Never seen it before.

god i forget what guns use the .44 I.X.L. shot it will come to me but it was use for a older small cal shotgun witch would have been used for getting rid of pest in the garden ect

.44-40 hollow points :eek: never seen hollow points made for the .44-40

I heard of some of the old timers using regular 44-40 in 410 shotguns. I know of an older gentleman long gone, who used to swear by the 44-40 rifle as well as 410 shotgun for deer hunting. He used 44-40 in his 410 on more than one occassion.
I'm sure someone out here will know what particular guns these shot shells were meant for.

I too had never seen 44-40 hollow points, that is why they came home with me. Here are a couple more pics:

that makes me think that must have been a over bore with a .427 bullets

.410 buckshot or slugs will takedown a deer nicely i just wish it where legal here in ont
 
I have forgotten what the "I" stands for but the "XL" is for extra long. More suited for the Marbles game Getter which I am suprised there is no mention of this on the box.
Don't quote me on this but I think they are a little long for some revolver cylinder lengths.
I wonder if these are some of the last remnants of the CIL museum collection that was sold off a few decades ago?
