I got bored the other day so I pulled out the rotary tool and had at my chinese wood stock.

A week later here is the end result. Sorry about picture quality all I have is a web cam. :rolleyes:

I am pleasantly surprised at how nice the mystery wood turned out. :)

I sanded first with 80 grit via the rotary tool, then gave it a light going over by hand with a 350 grit. T.S.P'ed the stock and a quick wipe with 70% isopropyl once it had dried.

2 coats of stain and 5 of exterior Varathane later I'm a happy camper.
 
I gave mine a bit of a going over too. Only i did it by hand , soaked the old girl in Mineral spirits and scrubbed with a pan scrubber ,(my misses was impressed)
then got the final crud off with some acetone, Sanded it all by hand .then about 10 coats of urathane , and then wet & dried sandpaper really fine, also used Mineral spirit instead of water . then a wipe over with acetone to really clean up all the dust then a final coat of urathane . i diddnt use any stain as i thought the wood looked good enough .It still has a few battle scars visible but i diddnt want to go too deep with the sanding , just smoothed everything out .
Now the finnish is like a browning and silky smooth
not the best piccies but on one you can see the reflection from the cleaning stand .
