Here's an old timer for you. A Winchester Model 1873, 44-40, received in the Winchester warehouse November 10th, 1888 and shipped March 26, 1889. A farming family in a wild area of Ontario, Canada, bought it new about 1889. It stayed in the family until this past year, when the current descendants, still living on the same farm, didn't want it anymore. You can tell from looking at this old timer that it has earned its keep over the years. There is a mystique about a grizzled old Winchester that commands respect.

If anyone wants me to email them hi-res copies of these desktop photos, just email me. The Winchester calendar ain't coming out this year. I'm finishing up the photos, but it is already too late to send the calendar off to market. Keep yer fingers crossed for next year.

Great score man! The fools that decided to let that one go........

Glad it got to go to a home where it will be enjoyed. My family did the same thing with the firearms they had, they were only viewed as tools then and were sold or given away with no way to trace them. What a bugger it is proving to be trying to find even another "mock" gun to replace them.

One thing I really like about this old rifle is that everything is original. The stock has never been sanded or refinished and the metal never re-blued. It even still has the original rear sight elevator.

I have, what could well be her sister made in 1892 :)
Has it got some decent rifling?
Mine has a dark bore but the rifling is still fairly sharp, & that is something that's hard to find on a 73!
 
The rifling is worn and the bore is pitted, but I can still get 4" five-shot groups at 100 yards with the oldtimer.
 
I also appreciated the WWII haversack, takes me back to one my uncle gave me and I used untill the canvas rotted, perfect for carrying 2 boxes of twelve gauge, thermos, flashlight, lunch, and in the domed pouch licenses, ready for the duck hunt

I carried one for years until a couple yrs ago when I started useing one of those belt packs, still have the old canvas one & it's in pretty good shape too :)
