I was watching a small local rural auction the last few days. I went in and made a few bids and created a watch list. The was one rifle that caught my attention but it had very few details other that it was a Winchester bolt action in .270

Fast forward to today and I go in to check my bids before the 1100 hr close. Well this Winchester is sitting at 290.00

I take a closer look at the photos and its in pretty good shape, someone over the years has carved a single line Bear into the stock, but very well done. Looks like original aperture sights are intact. I find the serial number and start doing some research. At first I thought it was a 54, but no, the serial number won't work with that. I hit a M70 collectors site run the serial number 1704 and it comes back as a 1936 Type 1-1 Model 70. Hmm I think, this maybe something to throw a bid or two in. This was the first year of M70 production.

Anyways, I ran the bid up to around 410.00 but every time I bid someone bids 10.00 more. Im watching a couple other items I had book marked and the time ran out on the M 70. I think it went for 430.00

Im thinking now, Is this something I should have been a little more serious about ?

Thoughts ?
 
It would not surprise me if there are collectors that would pay 5 x the selling price for that rifle, as you described it. I bought a 1955 in 30-06 last year on EE for more than twice that selling price. Dollar wise, someone did very well for themselves, I think. Depending about the carving into the stock though...
 
I paid $800 for a 1939 prewar M70 20” carbine in .270…a great price. If that rifle had no extra holes and the original metal buttplate he stole it.
