Directly to the receiver. If I remember correctly the screws are 8-32 or 10-32 thread pan head. Just make sure the screws don't rub on the bolt.

Yep, directly to the receiver. You mentioned 7/8" scope. I'd measure again as I thought the Mossberg mount was for a 3/4" scope. Back in the day Weaver made side mounts that you could get in either 3/4" or 7/8".
