Hey Folks, I have an older Mossberg 500 ab with no recoil pad or mods, that I am looking to mod and use for skeet and trap. I find that the kick is a bit much for me to use all day the way it is. Im looking on suggestions for minimizing recoil. I am assuming a recoil pad is ideal, but have heard of putting lead shot in the stock. Any information would be a huge help, as i am new to shotguns.

You might not need to make modifications, there's low recoil target loads available from Challenger. Also consider working on your grip and stance if you haven't already.
I tried all that, and moved to 20gauge lol. Target loads in a 12gauge weren't bad, but slugs and buckshot were torturous.

Thanks for the great advice. I have used a borrowed 20 gauge semi, and can shoot all day, no pain, no bruise. I like the feeling of the 12, and have shot a few semis (too pricey for me to buy) that I felt like there was no recoil. do you have any suggestions for tutorials or threads that outling proper stance and grip?
Currently I shoot at my cottage with my brother who is also new, we just use a cheap pigeon thrower, but I also go to Silverdale Gun range some times, they often give advice on aim, but not much else in my experience. Could just be that I dont go enough to know the range officer.
The guys at Silverdale actually got me started in Trap as well, I didn't have a club membership at the time. There was a helpful individual (named Eric, if I'm not wrong) that helped me get from 8/25 to 22/25 in just a few visits. Plus I found there's less pressure or politics there so you just shoot better as your mind is clearer.

I have a 1974 with a 30 inch barrel. I have considered a 28 because mine is fixed modified and does not have chokes.
I have a semi in the WTS right now for 550 shipped. It doesn’t break the bank but it breaks clays all day long. Recoil pad helps a ton. Start there since they are pretty cheap. You can also unscrew your buttplate and fill the stock with leadshot to help out as well. But id start with the recoil pad first and see how you like it. Ive tried the cheap ones (Allen) but find they are stiff. Limbsaver is much nicer.
Is there a specific model i should be looking for from the Limbsaver? my 500 is a little old, and wood. not sure if there are differences in stock size

Should fit as they seem to be made for most shotguns and the soft rubber allows it to grip and stretch around most size stocks.
Good pad, reduce shot weight, reduce shot velocity all work to minimize felt recoil.
Limbsaver pad is a little "sticky" (soft surface) which might interfere with mounting the gun. Pachmayr Decelerator has a less sticky finish which has less chance of sticking, hanging up on clothes.
