A few years back when the OPP got their new semi-automatic hand guns we were told that the Ontario Government had all the old OPP revolvers destroyed rather than sell them. I would like to know if this is right and if the RCMP and all the rest of them destroyed their,s too.

It probably is true. Many PD's just melted them down to scrap. Also, almost all of these guns with the exception of the 5" RCMP guns were 4" or less so they were instantly prohibited.

Most of the transition from revolvers to semi's happened during the height of C68 stupidity and politicians had concerns that these guns would somehow make it back to the streets. Some agencies traded them in to the companies selling them the semi autos but usually with a condition that the guns be exported to another country (or continent in some cases) and never come back. I used to watch a homemade gun show on the satellite called The Shooting Show with a guy called Johnny Rowland. He tested a gun available from Clark Custom Guns which was a 4" S&W .38 cut down to 3". He said these were Canadian police trade ins so you know they haven't been shot too much!:runaway:

I purchased a Pre-Model 20 S&W Heavy Duty with a 5 inch barrel off of a Mountie, who purchased it off of another Mountie, that used to carry it in his constable duties, until issued the M10 S&W, in and around 1971'ish.

It was first imported with a batch of 100 S&W Heavy Duty 38-44 HV revolvers, in 1940 for the BCPP force. Then was "loaned" to the RCMP who took over thier duties in BC during 1950.

It's stamped BCPP next to the lanyard ring.

It's a fun revolver to shoot for sure, once one gets used to the fixed sights.
This big ole N-frame really absorbs any preceived recoil and has an awesome DA pull.
