A friend was asking about an old handgun he was made aware of. Apparently the owner moved away, and left the registered handgun with another person (who is an now an RPAL holder). This was quite a long time ago, before the current registration program was put in place. It's believed to be the old green registration card, but he hasn't confirmed this yet.

The owner would now like to sell the handgun, but is concerned about having neglected to update the registration.

Has anyone had any experience with updating an old registration like this? Is the owner in for some legal difficulties, or will they just update it if he calls the CFP?

I'm new to restricted firearms, so couldn't give much advice.

I went through this about 6 years ago. Old friend had a revolver that he bought under the old FAC system. Never renewed the reg. or even up dated to a RPAL. I bought it, we called the Can. Firearms Center and they were very happy to reregister it to me. It was hassle free, they were very helpful. But like I said it was 6 years ago.

Sometimes you have to wait them out.

I was registering a number of pistols from an older fellow. All went through without a problem except fro one of them and it may have even been a prohibit. When he originally tried to register it to the new system and there was some glitch. There glitch i suspect was the moron the other end. So i inherited the glitch. They told me at the very least i had to go to a verifier. I ended the conversation and ignored it, transferred all the pistols but that one. Got a phone call a few weeks later asking if I when i would complete the transfer, and I told them when I feel like it and when I have time and at the moment and the foreseeable future I didn't feel like putting in the effort and chasing my tail for bogus information that they already had and jumping through hoops.. Again i let it ride. Few months later, got the call again and asked the same. Told them I'm busy, they then said ok, why don't we just do it over the phone. I must have laughed at them for a few minutes and then got back on the line and said "see, its much easier when you actually do your job and don't ask me to do it for you." Done in 2 minutes.

The problem could be that the registered owner is not the holder of the gun. If I am reading this right.
Think about that for a minute .
being in the old system is not a problem as far as registering it goes, but the "owner" has to do it.

I recently saved a 12.6 Glock 23 from the grinder, its former owner was a good friend who recently passed. The firearm was registered originally (green form), but not re-registered. The usually crack (no sarcasm intended) staff at the Firearms Centre did take a tiny bit longer than usual to process a transfer - a second phone call with more information when I got to the firearm itself was necessary, but no big deal.

In my case, the original owner knew he had two weeks to live, and I'm pretty sure that he wasn't worried about running afoul of some bull####. In your case, your friend has very little at all to be concerned about.
