Old rusty rifles....

Good day all. Looking for some quick info as I am by no means an antique weapons afficianado. I recently was given 2 antique rifles. The first one I believe is the Vetterli mentioned in my signature, the second came with no background info and has no markings that I can make out.

What I would like to know, is if there are any good antique dealers in the Edmonton area that anyone could recommend to help me with identification. Also, these rifles aren't exactly in the best of shape, is it worth it to have them restored or should I just clean em up with some CLP and keep them as they are?

Could very well be, the person who had these rifles originally had a large collection of european antiques. Unfortunately he passed away and his collection was handed off to family and friends, but a lot of the documentation he had was misplaced or lost.
 
Sorry I can't help on ID but I can comment that the condition of the parts of the rifles in the photos are not in awful shape. Search some of Moocoon or englishman's posts to see how those things clean up.
 
That second one looks an awful lot like a 14 gauge I got off Mooncoon.
He couldn't 100% identify it, but figured it was made between 1840 and 1850.

For the record the 14 gauge shoots great with 70 grains of 2f and an 1oz an 1/8 shot.
 
Thanks for the info. I dont think I'll be shooting anytime soon.. As I said, they we're given to me as a gift, for the the time being, I only intend to clean em up and put em on display.
 
The proper designation for the Vette would be an 1869/71 . Check out "SwissRifles.com" for more details.
