So I recently won a Single-Point, Red Dot, Occluded-Eye Gunsight (OEG) at Switzer's December Auction for just over $200. This made me a very happy camper, as it allowed me to complete my Colt AR15 Carbine-based clone/tribute of the GAU-5A/A "submachinegun" used during Operation Ivory Coast, the 1970 Raid on the Son Tay Prisoner of War Camp located not far from Hanoi in North Vietnam. I took an original Colt SP1 Carbine and replaced the Barrel Assembly with an 11.5" tube, a Foresight Base and a faux Moderator. The balance of the Colt is more or less correct for a GAU-5A/A, as it comes with the correct coated aluminum Buttstock and it lacks the Forward Assist of the Army's XM177E2. The Single-Point OEG was the missing piece of the puzzle for my tribute carbine. So here is is - the first known use of a "Red Dot" sight in combat operations....
