I was recently given a 100 or so old shells and in the bunch are 6 purple, reduced recoil number 8's. The primer seems to be protruding out a little bit (enough for me to grab with finger tips) and I've never seen this before. Are they garbage/dangerous or is it normal??
I realize this isn't a FAQ but it's a newbie question for sure!

Can you take a pic of it and post it.

I have shot old shotgun shells. As long as they don't show any corrosion it should be okay to shoot. The purple bunch are a paper shell? Does it look like a slug in it?

If you don't want to shoot them take them to a gun shop and I'm sure they will take them of your hands and properly dispose of them. Not a good idea to just throw them in the garbage.

Hope that helps.

I have never shot reloaded shotgun shells. Not sure if it would seat properly to shoot. You will have to decide for yourself.

Take care.

The ones in the pics. look like reloads, when fiocchi empties first appeared here the primer pockets were a little small for our primer size and required a smaller primer to fit(which fiocchi sold). When you tried to use reg. primers, they would protrude like those, that was years ago and i don't know if more recent hulls are the same.
