Old time C-I-L paper 3" ammo

Shotshells cost about half as much as they did in 1960 when adjusted for inflation.
There was a darn little left over for sport when home expenses were covered.

Wasn't like that in my home working in
Humm I was buying my lead 100 bags at a time and powder 6 x 12 pounders in the 60's. I could not afford that today. In fact I could not afford to shoot today if I didnot stash as much as I did over the years. Hulls I got for free now sell for 25 cents each alone

Cheers

Just came across this thread. Good memories for me as well. Grew up on a farm in SW Ontario (Perth Cty) in the 60's. Market hunting Jack Rabbits was legal then. They sold for a buck each. We all used the purple Imperial shells and # 2 shot. Every hardware store and most country general stores sold shot shells and 22LR. Most had an open box and you could buy individual rds which went out the door in a brown paper bag or in your pocket. I remember shooting 10 jacks one sunny afternoon (don't think there was a limit), ran out of shells and stopped in at my uncle's garage where I bought a half dozen more shells. In my opinion life was much simpler.

My Dad used Imperial Special Long Range in his Tobin. He only hunted upland. He was also known to blast the odd red squirrel out at his grain farm. I used it after he passed away. As with today, each had their favorite shell. Maxim, Canuck Heavy Load, and both varieties of Imperial were the only shotgun shells I ever saw being used when I was a kid. I think some of the big wig duck hunters used Winchester and Remington/Peters.

I have a collection of many different shotshell boxes, mostly with shells, in my office at my playhouse/shop. I have a weakness for paper shells. I lost my sense of smell so I can't enjoy the smell of a good old C-I-L hull. Darn.

So many comments on the smell of those old CIL shotshells. I too have great memories from that smell... my Old Man used the purple Imperials out of his old Model 12. Mom's 410 as well... purple Imperials.

So... question is WHAT was the powder that CIL used in them? I would love to get ahold of some... reload some 'retro' shells just for Shlts and Giggles...

My guess is some proprietary CIL powder...but who knows?
